I bought the new 2024 barbie signature dolls! I also bought the original vintage 2002 first edition my scene dolls! all by Mattel, of course! today we will unbox, review, and compare both of them!

The reason 2002 Chelsea’s screening looks a little fuzzy is because her face is sprayed. I think some 2002 batches were sprayed & some were using tampo. Basically, spray is airbrushing each detail of the face individually using masks. When a doll is sprayed, it can make for variants between dolls, so some may look more clean/crisp while others could have a more smoked out/fuzzy look. Spray is a more expensive method (but gives a better look with dimension that gives the illusion of real makeup imo) that was the standard technique used (for the most part) back then by toy companies like Mattel & MGA, but it’s been phased out now sadly & replaced by cheaper alternatives, which is why many of Mattel’s recent doll screenings can look very flat & sticker like (tampo) or terribly pixelated (a method called DIJ which needs to be abolished imo). The 2024 dolls have a new head with flatter eyelids to accommodate their newer method of doing things.

Love your review & appreciate you going over the details & comparing them to the OGs. I’m really happy to see Mattel actually acknowledge My Scene again (they never acknowledge them) & give them their flowers in the form of tribute dolls with a newer take on their original designs. The 2024 girls are cute for the most part & I really like how elements of their plastic purses from 2002 were translated to fabric versions. Things like that feel more upgraded. However, as these are supposed to be collector dolls with a collector price point, I do think Mattel could have put more effort to make these more deluxe & gone the extra mile to make them a moment! These look very playline, (playline jewellery being used doesn’t help) and the 2002 dolls actually look like deluxe collector dolls in comparison, from the designs, to the secondary outfits, the colour palettes, to the accessory choices, packaging design and just overall execution…the OGs are more deluxe & it really goes to show how much effort & attention to detail they used to put into their playline dolls back then, which is unfortunately not the case anymore. I will most likely get them, as I’m a MS fan & would love to see the brand have a resurgence, but I really want Mattel to step their game up & start putting more effort & funds into quality & design again. It’s been way too many years of watered down & cheaply made Barbie dolls, & I want her to get back to being the doll we all fell in love with again.

I'm probably the only collector that likes saddle stands. They are great for dolls with gowns. The My Scene stand fits Barbie. I have my Madison sitting in her beach chair so she doesn't need her stand.

The OG's CLEAR the reboot. Very disappointed in the reboot dolls, but at least I get to save money lol

My jaw dropped with the sock reveal. 😭Literally just little strips of fabric. I feel like they might as well have just not given her “socks” at all.
Aside from that, I think Chelsea’s outfit is really cute and I’ll definitely be getting her.

I love the new MyScene dolls, however they seem less “deluxe” and more like buget dolls compared to their OG counterparts but for a higher price. I love Chelsea and I really want her when she goes on sale.
I think reproductions of the originals would be awesome too 🙂

I love OG My Scene so much that I struggle to like new My scene as much. But I am glad to see the girls back and I will need to see them in person to know if I will get them or not. I will likely get Madison because she is my fav character although I am not a fan of her outfit. I like the OG one more, it felt more classy.

My Scene is one of my favorite Barbie lines ever! I still have the originals from all those years ago, and I refuse to part with them. I don't own every single one, but I have all the ones I ever did own. I'm tempted to get these new ones, but at the same time, Mattel's quality has gone down in 20 years and they're so similar to the originals it may not be worth it. I wish they'd shifted away from the fake leather. But I'm still so tempted!!! I hope they add Nolee as well! I love Chelsea's new hairstyle! She was always my favorite back in the day. :D The 2024 version's eyes look smaller to me than the 2002 version. Can't wait to see Barbie!

When I was little in 2003, I had the my scene Chelsea doll back to school one. She came with two complete outfits. My sisters had the same back to school line but one had Barbie and the other Madison so we each had the 3 different dolls
