I often think of it like this. If a previous advanced race existed here and they developed space travel, perhaps they left only to come back and find all trace of their past was long gone but there was now another species showing signs of early civilisation. What would they do? Hang around and watch? Involve themselves with us in order to help us along in our development? Decide to leave us be and head back into space to other worlds they may have discovered? I guess we'll never know for sure
