I love seeing these guys! I believe they’re what I see at lakes all the time

Thanks for this. I've seen these snakes before and got them confused with the Eastern  Massasauga Rattlesnake. The markings look similar, but now I can see how the Northern Watersnake is darker and its markings are a lot less pronounced.

I had the pleasure to see one of these in a really dark color scheme with very rectangular looking patterns like the still photo image early on in the video on the rocks. I've never seen one so dark maybe charcoal grayish tones. Wrapped up on a coil up in the branches in the swamp that's flooded at the moment. The head was really small compared to the body. Unfortunately, I spooked it when going by and it went into and under the water and I didn't see again as I was passing by. Really neat. DNR babe too!

I saw one at Ocqueoc falls last weekend. Right on the rocks getting sun near the people playing in the water falls

We’ve got a ton of these this year down in Southern IL in the Kaskaskia River. I usually see one or two a year. This year I’ve seen several. Way more than usual. Mostly babies and a couple fully grown. Anyway, now my kids are scared to get in the river that they’ve swam in all their lives, so I was looking for an informational video to ease their minds. Thank you!

I had the volume turned down, so "On this episode of Sixty Second Snakes" made it sound like Hannah spoke Parseltongue

Nice to know they aren't dangerous because I was up to my knees pan fishing today in Michigan and seen about 4 of these swimming around really close! I was scared at first and almost tapped it with my bobber as I reeled in but it didn't even flinch LOL, another one was coiling up in an under water tree root and swam away as I came near. They were all the size of this one in the video so they must be babies🤗

Swimming today i had a HUGE one swim right beside me. I stood still and it tasted the air. Moved on through. Glad it did because that ole boy was as big around as a toilet paper tube and about 3 ft long! I think its the same one ive seen a few years ago at the same fishing lake. Nice guy.

Warning: they bite hard! I used to catch snakes as a kid and was bitten many times by other species, but the northern watersnake always bit the hardest

I just caught a baby one of these snakes yesterday on the river I gently picked it up with palm of my hands it just slithered thru my fingers it was so gentle didn’t even bite at all i let it go after handling it a bit i love snakes so much there so misunderstood and there gentle if ur gentle to them never grab a snake by the head or tale unless u want them to show aggression towards u always have knowledge 1st before handing them and only pick them up with ur hands flat under there belly and there tamed to u I’ve handled snakes all my life this is the way

They seem to be curious or they just like hanging with fisherman hoping for some bait. But they seem to love my kayak. 😆

That's a very tame specimen. All the ones I've encountered here in North Carolina are very "bitey" - they are not venomous, but they strike quickly and repeatedly when disturbed. The video is a bit misleading - don't try to handle these common snakes!

And they will try to eat fish off of a stringer
