In case it hasn't been mentioned elsewhere in these comments, it was the brother of famous author Kurt Vonnegut - Bernard Vonnegut, who invented the "cloud seeding" process. He used silver iodide.

The author parodied this scientific phenomenon in his novel "Cat's Cradle" as the fictional substance "Ice 9" which would freeze water solid when coming into contact. In the novel a small amount is released into the world's water supply which causes all the oceans to freeze which in turn causes the extinction of humans.

Cloud Seeding, Hail Suppression using Agl by air was started in Calgary Alberta Canada in 1961. I flew the Harvard AT6’s used for the cloud seeding from 1961 to 1968.
A chapter is dedicated to my Cloud-Seeding flights and is in my book, “Tower Tales” by Jim Hall.
