No work experience? Why should we hire you?: Interviewing for jobs with no work experience (Part 1)

In this week's job search tip, we're going to discuss job interview tips for those of you interviewing for your first job. We're going to take a look at the question "Why should we hire you?" and see what employers are really asking. That's coming up.

Hi guys, I'm Kim with Snagajob, your number one source for hourly jobs, and welcome to our weekly job search show where we give you job search advice from resume tips to interview advice, and everything in between.

This series we're going to talk about how to interview for your first job. It's tricky and can be scary...we know. We've all been there. But, getting that first job may not be as hard as you think.

So, you've just been called in for your very first interview. After the happy dance ends, you may start to get a little worried about not knowing what to do. That's what we're here for. So, take a deep breath and let us walk you through it.

This week we're going to focus on the job interview question, "Why should we hire you?"

If this question comes up in your interview, chances are it is one of the last questions you get asked. So, this may be your last chance to prove to the employer that you are their best option for the position.

Stay away from the answers that remind them of your lack of experience:

"No one else will hire me because I don't have any experience. Are you up for the challenge?"

"I just want a first job and it's really hard to find one!"

Your best bet is to pull from experiences in your life that show you are professional and responsible.

"I am a very motivated worker and a fast learner. During my time volunteering with a local thrift store, I realized how much I enjoy customer service and the retail world in general. From what you've told me in this interview, I think this position would make a great fit and I'm excited about this opportunity."

What if you are one of those average young people who have no life experience to draw from, no clubs, no volunteer work, no after school or summer projects? What if you just kept your head in your books and hung out with your family and friends?

I guess this normal kid is just SOL with the global corporate world because unlike the old mom and pop shops which would take a chance on a local kid because they know them, the big corporation needs a goddamn paper trail!

Guys to save your time applying online is pretty much a waste of time. Do yourself a favor and go into the place ask to talk to the manager and ask for an application and introduce yourself. Then come in later that week and ask for the status of the application

I have an interview tomorrow through a temp agency, for a cleaning job. I was told by the lady at the temp agency that I would need to give the interviewer for the place I'm applying to five reasons for them to hire me. Five?! I have next to no job experience whatsoever - my sister gave me a summer job cleaning and babysitting her kids a couple years ago, and that's literally IT. That's the one and only reason I can think of for them to hire me. And since I'm nearly 23 and that's all I've done since high school (and I was never in any school clubs or volunteered for anything) I know how bad that must look. Honestly, I have really bad social anxiety and put off job searching (serious searching, that is) for a really long time. I have no people skills whatsoever, and nothing to impress them with. What am I supposed to tell the interviewer? Also, is an interview through a temp agency different from a normal interview? I need advice, and fast. D:

Edit: Never mind. I misunderstood the temp agency lady. I ended up not being asked that question at all. The interview was a lot easier than I thought it'd be, so...yeah. I feel silly now. :P Oh, and I did get the job.

Thanks for making these videos, they really did help me.

I have been scouring the Internet to try to find interview examples for two teens I'm working with, from Sudan. They have no work experience and English is not their first language. Everything here is foreign to them. I have sat through probably a dozen videos that just aren't appropriate at all - too much background information, the examples wouldn't mean anything to them, etc. YOURS is the FIRST I've found that is PERFECT. And added bonus - you have correct closed captions, which will make it so much easier for them to understand. A thousand thank yous for this!

Good question! Volunteering and school activities were just examples. Babysitting, community activities - any extracurricular activities that you can use to show you are responsible and dependable will do.
