Delightful. Polar opposite to Japan where it's like they don't want tenants at all, the process is so maddening and frustratingly complicated and drawn out. Not to mention offensively expensive.

Renting an apartment in China as a foreigner: 😃

Wait wait - hold on. Yes - if you are finding a local place it’s like this BUT please note that if you are a citizen you have to ask or submit a request to move to another area. If you have children it’s even harder to move outside of your area to another city. China typically does a great job ensuring that areas where you live, you have access to everything you need (a well rounded community) so this is also a plus. If anyone has learned of any changes from what I just said please comment and let me know.

Omg they make it so easy to get a place!!! I wish America was like that but here its damn near impossible to afford rent unless u work three jobs and have roommates. And thats if u were accepted through the application an make three times the amount of rent and have co signers.

My favorite thing about renting in China was that we saw a 2 bedroom apartment but the kicker was it was studio with two separate beds in the same room 😂 I love their literalness so much!

Every 3 months? That is pretty interesting actually. And they come furnished? Amazing.

My experience renting an apartment in Beijing was so different! I wonder if it is a more competitive market? As a foreigner many landlords refused to rent to me and when I did find one willing to, I had to pay 6 months of rent at a time. There was also an increase of 100RMB to the monthly rent because I was foreign. 😅

Lived in China as an expat for over 10yrs. Renting an apartment in Beijing and Shanghai is super easy and straightforward. It’s sad some Americans can be so close-minded about learning from China, and assume just because it’s China, there’s nothing worth learning from. Great video! Thanks!

I had to essentially harass the leasing agents for any leasing company to get a response. Im talking calling a least 3 times a day. So hearing that in China they respond so quickly makes me wanna cry 🥲

Man the US needs to catch up. Over here you have to apply and pay a fee with every application. They run your credit and you have to make 3x the rent and of course first month, last month and security. Studios are over $1200 where I am.

Oh yeah I found the three months pre paid tough.... I thought locals can pay monthly.

It is worth negotiating when renting. Even in the UK where there is a shortage of rental properties. I said it's a shame the flat does not come with a washing machine. To which the agent said I'm sure were can have one installed before you move in. It's just best to hint, and not demanding incase the land lord chooses someone else.

Your channel just popped up for me. Would love to see you do longer videos about why you decided to move to China and your experiences as a foreigner over the big *event* that happened your first years living there. Your videos are very interesting!

My son relocated to Germany and says that renting an apartment/flat in Germany is next to impossible. There is a critical housing shortage there and if one becomes available, there will be 50 or more people interested and competing for the same unit as if you were competing for a job. It won’t be unusual to see long lines of people waiting in line to “view” the apartment. After you’ve been vetted and deemed to be the best tenant among the hundreds of other applicants and get selected, you’ll get a bare bones unit. There will be no kitchen, no light fixtures, absolutely nothing except bare walls. If you get lucky, the previous tenant might offer to sell you the customized kitchen he/she previously installed because it might not fit in their next apartment. The situation is so bad in Germany that even public housing for the indigent people is not available. I did not expect that from a first world country.

Yes, it’s really easy and hassle-free. One of the things I love about China.
In Shanghai you can rent a 2-3 bedroom apartment for RMB2500-3000. And yes, oftentimes they’re already fully furnished. You just need to bring your personal stuff. It’s nice to rent apartments in new apartment complexes —new furniture and home appliances provided by the landlord, better parking space and convenient location. Cost of water, gas and electricity is cheap. Lots of huge public parks in every city.
And it’s safe.

I remember the time we got approved to move into an apartment, we SCRUBBED it from top to bottom, moved all our things in, and then the owner decided they didn’t want to rent to us because we were American. So we had to move out and scrub another apartment top to bottom.
90% of the apartments are as dirty as the last tenant left them including whatever crap their kids left stuck to the floor, a disgusting grease trap over the stove..
And we once hired a cleaner and they came over with a washcloth and used water from the sink.
There is very much to be desired about tenant rights and sanitation in China.

It’s clear china has abundant rentals - when housing is scarce it gets scary.

Ppl like to comment about this being propaganda which is quite silly. I have also seen YouTube channels of American living in uk and Australia commenting about their lives there and how good it is and no one bring up the propaganda bit.

The renting in India is the same as this! I'm surprised to learn the similarities between Indian and Chinese cultures every day!

Three times rent is required in America. Cheapest one bedroom is ~1500 so they want you to make 4500 a month 👺 everyone just lies cuz no one makes that much
