Student-produced podcasts are an engaging way to merge project-based learning, storytelling and digital media skills. Podcasts give students a voice — an opportunity to tell their story, teach something new or explore a topic that’s important to them. This is our third year inviting young people to participate in our Podcast Contest, and we’ve consistently been amazed by the variety of topics students choose and the creative approaches they employ in making original, informative and entertaining podcasts.

In these audio narratives, students can tell a story about a childhood memory, a life-changing experience or a bad romance. They can interview guests about: a news-related issue, such as gun violence or the coronavirus pandemic; an academic subject they’re studying, such as rising sea levels or the Vietnam War; or a hobby or personal interest, like hip-hop music or basketball. They can also share a conversation about pop culture, sports, politics or literature.

In this webinar, Learning Network editors are joined by Laura Winnick, a school librarian from New York with experience teaching podcasting to students, and together we will:

- Discuss different formats, elements and techniques that can make for effective podcasts
- Show you how to find and use engaging writing prompts that can help students brainstorm podcast topics
- Share how you can use winning student podcasts as mentor texts
- Walk you through the specifics of our Podcast Contest
- Leave you with ideas for how students can create podcasts in the classroom, or at home, right away.
