Britain’s Labour Party seemed poised for a landslide victory in Friday's parliamentary election, as indicated by an exit poll released after voting ended at 10 pm (UK local time) on Thursday. The poll, released just after voting ended, suggested that centre-left Labour leader Keir Starmer would be the next prime minister.
Labour leader Keir Starmer declared the country is ready for change as he addressed his own constituency of Holborn and St Pancras in London. In a brief speech, Starmer stopped short of declaring victory as prime minister, but said the country had voted for change. After his speech, Starmer shook hands with his local opponents including Nick the Incredible Flying Brick of the Monster Raving Loony Party and Bobby “Elmo” Smith, who came dressed in an Elmo costume.
A party needs to win at least 50 percent of the seats – 326 – to secure a majority in the House of Commons and be asked to form a government by the monarch, King Charles III.
The members of Parliament’s upper chamber, the House of Lords, are appointed rather than elected.
If no party wins a majority, there is a hung parliament. If this occurs, the largest party can choose to form a coalition with other parties.
