The fear of freedom thing is that is subconsciously holding humans back in financial situations. That is where the story with the crabs in the bucket comes to play. They will pull you back once you want to achieve something, calling it bad or naming all the risks that can happen and that is why most people do not become rich. This can lead to the fight or flight instinct. and depending on the person it will work differently, but in most cases they give in to the flight instinct, which makes them listen to the others instead of pushing through with their idea. Its fascinating. EDIT: it also goes along well with the crowd instinct :)

Why i don't sense any malnipulations at the final story? For me, i think that she is just trying to warn him about the dangers that he never notices. Now he notices that, so he is scared.
