Unlike Trump's proposed tariffs for China, the tariffs heading for Canada and Mexico can be viewed as leverage (or bargaining chips) to address issues amongst our North American trade partners.

What’s the point of another treaty if you can’t honor the first one you negotiated

I looked it up last year 43 lbs of fentanyl seized at the Canadian border compared to over 21, 000 lbs at the Mexican border. Over 90% of fentanyl arrives by ship to US port from China.
Meanwhile according to Toronto police over 84% of gun crime they have successfully linked to US firearms illegally imported north.
Applying tariffs that will ruin our neighbor’s economies is not a good move.

personally, i'm getting really tired of the fact that everyones 'solution' to various drug problems isn't to fix the social circumstances that make people turn to drugs, it's just to try to get rid of the drugs. all that ever does is force the people who want to be doing drugs becuase their life sucks to turn to whatever the next drug is. it's literally trying to build sandbags against the tide, and it's never going to fix the underlying problem that they refuse to recognize

Virtually all the trucks used in Canada, and we buy those in the billions of $$$, are manufactured in the US. We would absolutely love to buy them from other countries in SEA where a wide array of smaller and cheaper industrial vehicles are available. Keep treating your partners like trash and we go elsewhere real fast.

Increased cost of building supplies > increased cost of housing and maintenance > increased property taxes, insurance costs, rent

The US consumers will love the tariffs on Canadian oil and gas… The price points of these commodities out to the consumer is set by the highest price.
Or even a worse case scenario, Canada restrict their oil and gas exports to the US until the “trade war” is settled

Trump's policies had been viewed by many experts as more positive for the financials sector, spurring this massive rally. It's enticing to consider purchasing some stocks, I'm contemplating investing more than $300k. Thoughts?

You’re forgetting all the crude Canada sends to the USA. Your cost of energy will go up to.

Leveraging trade agreements to get what you want on some other issue might not be stupid in and of itself, but starting the process with a public threat was needlessly destructive.

Canada will respond in tariffs our problem is the guns coming up this way and we along with the rest of the world will start moving away from making deals with the USA and see that works for you

I get what he wants from Mexico, but what's the problem with Canada?

Would it not be easier to fix fentynol problem at the root? No one is forcing the addicts to use them. Put addicts in mandatory rehab fascilities or mental institutions. Educate them until they can be re-integrated into society as productive citizens. Just removing the fentynol supply doesn't fix anything. Addicts will always fins something else to abuse

Perhaps it's more reasonable to ask sociologists, and medical researchers/professionals WHY Americans eat so much drugs and develop policy around reducing our culture's desire for drugs instead of continuing this whole whack-a-mole business. Seems pretty damn obvious

I'm taken aback by how people are talking about President Elect Trump as though he's in office and implementing policy now. This is amazing, never seen anything like it.
