The Trump administration is planning to impose some hefty tariffs on China. This isn't just to reform trade practices and show China "who's the boss", but rather to shift industrial production away from China permanently.

Tariffs will increase costs of finished goods and components used throughout US manufacturing. This will be an immediate and huge hike in inflation. To fight inflation the Fed will have to hike interest rates which will be wonderful for the billionaires but possibly take away the middle class. Inflation is so high that consumers are literally taking debt for basic life necessities. Collapse has indeed begun..

if foreign goods get more expensive, local goods follow with higher prices..

It took 40+ years to give away our industrial base. Wealthy capitalists and our captured government did it to access cheap labor and avoid environmental regulations. It's hard to see how it could be brought back any faster, not to mention US businesses' aversion to living wages. Universal, single-payer healthcare would help labor costs and make labor more mobile to respond to re-industrialization. Most importantly, tax and trade policy must be right and consistent for decades for this to happen.

Proud to say, I worked for a Japanese company that moved their usdm production to the United States back in the early 90s. The most expensive model was built here, and the best-selling model came from a factory in Canada.

Imagine trying to justify tariffs with a word salad about "fairness" while simultaneously controlling world's money supply and world's banking system...
I presume that trade being "fair" is only when US corporations and US country getting more power and control. When they are beaten in their own game, then suddenly stuff becomes "unfair" and needs to be regulated with non-market tools like tariffs and subsidies.

The reason foreign manufacturers are successful exporting into the US is that our production costs are too high. Tariffs only help to hide this problem..

In the 1960’s I had an aunt who worked for Levy’s making blue jeans and they were one of the first companies who moved their manufacturing business to China. Greed is what has been one of the major problems in the country.

Tariffs won't work. Consumers, especially American consumers, want cheap goods. This is the reason why China, Indonesia, Bangladesh and other countries have manufacturing hubs. American workforce is very expensive, which is why very few people in the world can afford American manufactured goods. This is the same Trump that said that Mexico was going to pay for a border wall. Really? We complain when our gas prices go up by 5 cents a gallon.

"China is not a very profitable industrial power." That's why it was able to pull 800 million people out of poverty in 4 decades, and managed to become the world's largest economy. "It only managed to get to where it is now through massive subsidies." And where is the money for the subsidies come from exactly? Definitely not through money printing as we do in this country. Lol, I only watch Peter's videos now for comedy purposes, that's some funny and delusional stuff right there.

Tariff is just another word for tax. All that will happen is good get more expensive for everyone.

Expect a world recession started by Trump. Trade promotes wealth. It goes in both directions. Decreased trade means lower income for everyone.

Why does everyone think what a politician says is what they do? Why don't people pay attention to what politicians do, rather than say?

I think the problem with taking the tariff money to fund the projects to build the plants for industry is that requires a surplus in funds. Trump has said he wants to use tariffs on china to offset his tax cuts, so it doesn't lead to anymore deficit spending. That also doesn't account for the debt we currently have, which is around 36 trillion last time I looked. Which we are only paying interest on and makes up 8% of the budget. Another thing to consider is how much do they cut from the government budget, cause if they cut to deep it will trigger a recession. Government spending amounts to about 36% of the GDP. So I think we are looking for a high deficit and high inflation spending going forward, which is also what the stocking market is banking on.
