Your brake lights stay on and don't go off ? Easy to fix.

If your car is off and your brake lights are on, this video is for you. This solution worked on my Toyota Corolla and should work on many other cars and trucks.
The brake lights stay on problem is almost always not the switch, but the rubber bumper that depresses the switch. Once the bumper gets old and falls apart there is a big hole where the bumper was and the lever can no longer depress the switch when the brake pedal is not depressed.
You will usually see pieces of the bumper on your floor mat. if you can't get to a shop to get a replacement some peole have taped coins or added wire ties to take the place of the bumper until they can get the part. I have also heard of a guy that simply used a 8/32 1/2 inch machine screw and nut to make a temporary repair.
To keep your battery from running down before you make the repair you can replace the fuse battery or remove the negative cable from your battery.
hope this helps.
Here is a link to brake pedal stop pad on amazon for toyota, they also have them for Nissan and Honda, etc.

We all need to take a minute and admire the agility and patience it took to record this process, I'm a slim small dude and damn near had to dislocate my shoulder to get under there.

Went to Walmart to grab some fig bars after work, came out, and saw my brake lights were on. At first, I thought it was someone else's car, because my car was turned off. Then I realized it was my car. Then I got scared because I thought someone was sitting in my car, that's why the brake lights were on. When I realized no one was in my car, I deduced this was a mechanical problem. Thanks for making this WELL-EXPLAINED video! I used a binder clip as a temporary fix until I go to work tomorrow and get a nut & bolt to use instead. But the binder clip works great.

Oh my gosh! Thanks. I recall seeing some green rubber in pieces on my floor mat and didn't know where it came from as I didn't have that shade of flipflop.
Was stalling on going to the electrician after taking off my terminal, and putting off errands, 3 days ago.
You just saved a Nigerian woman, living in Lagos, from having to spend extra money. 🇳🇬

Yup! You are exactly right ! Found the piece on the floor. Later my roommate said, hey your lights are on!
Lots of plastic on these 1999 Corolla (old and brittle) but my car still runs well and just passed 270, 000 miles. Thanks !

Thank you, for taking the time to post this info. Like most of the others, I too was saved a ton of stress and potentially money by watching this video!! Soon as I finished watching it, I looked on my floorboard to find the little rubber part in two pieces. I'm a fairly well educated female when it comes to cars as my dad rest his soul was a mechanic when I was growing up. Because of videos like these, I was able to replace my starter in my 1998 Toyota Corolla all by myself. It's a very proud moment in my life I continue to enjoy bragging about!! Not to mention the amount of money I saved not having to pay shop labor at $80+ /hour!! Thanks again!!!

That was definitely the problem. I used a tough little piece of cardboard with clear tape coating, and held it on with duct tape rolled in between ther plate and it. Thanks for this video I might not have figured it out.
It is really cramped in that space resulting in some cursing!

Thank you! This was the exact issue in my Hyundai. It's called a "stopper pedal" for my car. Was able to find on Amazon for cheap. Temporary solution is to tape 2 pennies in place.

Thanks so much! I can only imagine what a local shop would’ve charged to diagnose and fix glad I found this video and was able to do it with a replacement piece I bought on Amazon:

I cannot thank you enough. I was looking to convoluted videos and here you gave me the answer I needed. I went the do it yourself way instead of buying that piece of plastic for 9 dollars.

You saved me. I fixed mine with a hexagonal head screw. It was a bit frustrating because there isn't enough room. Thank you Sr.

I’ve bought my MR2 two years ago never had an issue with the taillights till today, luckily I came across your video and it helped. I turned out putting duck tape and it worked, thank you sir!!

It's always nice when the search words complete themselves, then to get the problem fixed with the first video you pick. Thanks Rob! I used the cutoff round end of an old bike handlebar grip and some tacky auto adhesive off an old buick riviera door panel interior. Worked great! Pays to save junk....Nylon bolt cut short and pushed thru the hole and then a hot butter knife to mushroom the threaded end would have worked too I think..Just sand the head to the right thickness before melting in. If my tacky ahesive fails I may try that next.

Thanx!!!! This helped me a lot!!! I get off work go to my car and my battery is completely dead…I get it jumped it starts….then I realized my break light are on???? So I found the little button that broke off on the floor and was able to wedge it back on so lights go off and it doesn’t kill my battery
