Surprised how many people don't understand what happened. The scandal that killed Milli Vanilli was NOT the fact that they lip synced. Everyone did that in TV shows like this. It also wasn't this technical failure.
It was the fact that they did never sing any of their songs in the studio. This failure here only was the beginning of the discovery.

I actually don't hate them for this. I feel sorry for them. The real villain behind this fraud was their producer. It was the producer who assembled the real singers behind all of Milli Vanilli's songs, but feeling that they weren't "Pretty enough" to be pop idols, decided to hire Rob and Fab, two small time models with aspirations of becoming singers.

Thing is, he flat out lied to them, gave them a huge advanced payment (Which they spent almost immediately), and it was only after they signed the contract that he told them that they would not be doing any real singing, they would be merely the frontmen of the band. Something that both Rob and Fab were decidedly NOT okay with. But by then they had already spent the small fortune they were paid in advance and had no way to back out of the contract.

The real singers behind the songs were not okay with it either, but they were threatened by the producers to keep quiet. As their fame kept rising, Rob and Fab wanted to end the farce and use their real singing voices, and kept pressuring their producer to let them do it, and after this particular fiasco where the track skipped, the producer decided to throw them under the bus by exposing the whole fiasco, leaving Rob and Fab to face all of the backlash, while the producer, while his own career took a hit, never faced even a shred of the same scrutiny or public shaming.

Worse yet, Rob and Fab were sued to hell and back, but their producer got away scot free.

It gets even more tragic when you find out that while Fab quietly retired from stardom and just produces small musical productions, Rob fell on hard times, was unable to recover, and eventually died of an overdose of alcohol and drugs.
