Something similar happened in the NHL in like 2018. It was a pretty big story if you followed hockey back then. The Chicago Blackhawks through a series of unfortunate events somehow lost all of their goaltenders, so they signed a guy from the local amateur league on a one-day emergency contract. This guy went on to make some crucial saves and the Blackhawks ended up winning that game. He became a hero for them for a while.

To make it worse, MLS does have an "extreme hardship" exemption that seems to be designed for this exact scenario. It was used to allow NYRB to call up a player 7 times this season. The league just didn't allow it for Columbus for some reason.

Due to COVID, River Plate once started a game in the Libertadores with a midfielder as the Goalkeeper, and no subs at all (only 11 players were available), and they actually won 2-1

One similar (not so similar maybe) case is when Enzo Perez played as a Goalkeeper for River in the libertadores a couple of years ago. While injured. For all 90 minutes. And they won 2-1!

It happened recently for Barrow A.F.C. The guy who went in goal, Rory Feely even managed to save a free kick.

I support Macclesfield FC in the 7th tier of English football. I'm not sure what other teams in the league do, but the league only allows 5 players on a bench and we don't select a backup Goalkeeper. I can think of at least two occasions where our goalkeeper has gone off injuried or has been sent off, or in one case, both. On that occasion Macclesfield were leading 2-0, and an outfield player went in goal, 8 players got behind the goal and we brought on a 6ft6 forward to try to hoof the ball up to and take into the corner at every opportunity. The goalkeeper s**t housed our way to victory, holding on to the 2-0 lead by trying to chest down or control everything with his feet, and would wait until the opposition player would jog up to him before picking up the ball (or diving on it). Every time the ball went down the wing, the defenders would blast the ball out of the ground, no ball boys at this level, so the balls came from either the bench or the tunnel, not sure which, but basically took longer to get the ball back in play.

Columbus: "How many Goalkeepers do we need?"
MLS's rules: "... Yes!"

Watched Swindon town, my local team play Barrow. Their keeper got sent off in the 42nd minute and we still drew 1-1. Your title gave me pain.

In the future they should call up non goalkeepers as goalkeepers for CONCACAF 3rd string. Just take a midfielder call him a goalkeeper for CONCACAF purposes

I went into this game thinking us the sounders would loose 3-0. Little did I know what would happen. That was a massive result for our season.

Last year, São Paulo FC had an unusual situation when they lost to injuries: 3 Right Backs, 1 Left Back, both starting Full Backs, 1 starting Mid Fielder and their imediat replacement and to top it all off their main
And all that happened within the first 11 matches of the season 🙃

This is just life imitating art right here. I've had something like this happen to me on my STL City save. I've never wanted to rage uninstall a game before. But that was the closest I've come to doing it.

The Goalkeeper is to blame. How as the only GK on the roster you commit that foul is beyond me.

I believe at Ado Den Haag they played an outfield player in goal bc the first gk got a red, the second got injured on the field. Up stepped Ricky ven den Bergh, the shortest player of the team and he made some amazing safes

It happens in serious leagues as well, but mostly if a team already did 3, now 5 substitutes

Ah news from Evan Bush, the guy is still playing? Montreal Impact legend with that Champion's league run in 2015. :D

Wasen't there MLS pool keepers? Kinda like hockey where there is a semi-pro or washed out keeper that can be loaned to either team? I remember Colorado rapids using one that was a part time cop, and Chivas using one that was an EMT.
