My In-laws live in eastern Ukraine. I just spoke to my Mother in-law. They are amused by all the hype that the west is making about this. They are not worried.

If this was really about security then that would make Russia one of the dumbest countries ever! Russia has worked so hard trying to convince countries to join NATO, I feel like they must get paid commission for each country that joins. It's the only way their diplomacy makes any sense. Ukraine wouldn't even want to ditch them if they only knew how to get along with others. Russia is blind to the fact that everyone who wants into NATO says it because of Russia, not the US. Typical Russian arrogance to assume that it's someone else's fault. Country after country turns away from Russia due to their awful economic and political management practices. Russia just needs someone to blame.

The abandonement of the Kurds and Afghans by the US should be a lesson for Ukrain.
What the Russians want is bad but what the US is doing is going to throw Ukrain in a marsh of mess while the US suddenly changes course.
The Ukrainians should rely on European diplomacy not US rhetoric to get out of this.
The US interest notwithstanding, the real issue and question is the expansion of NATO to Russia's end of the neighborhood.
The oligarchs running Ukrain want NATO for economic gains but does it need NATO at the cost of having an acrimonious Russia?
Does Europe need to expand NATO eastward at all ?

If it were the representative country of the Eastern World attack when know will use Europe to generate war opportunities, would think of attacking more than a dozen miles away place of ocean by a small island of Eastern World sideand put a large scrapped cargo ship as a target ship for an exercise, and the result would be to let the defending countries show out their defense methods. But the defending country will also know how the attacking country how to will fight way to island of the seas.
