Responding to Catholic Apologists on Purgatory

Examining the passage most often quoted by Catholic apologists to defend the doctrine of purgatory. 1 Corinthians 3 is quoted by Tim Staples and Jimmy Akin of Catholic Answers. It's even quote by pope Benedict in his 2007 encyclical "Spe Salvi". We are going to examine the passage thoughtfully to see what it really says.

As an ex -catholic, purgatory is like a waiting room to pay for unconfessed and unforgiven sins. Your loved ones will pay for masses and hopefully help you into Heaven. The thief on the cross was a sinner yet he asked the Lord to remember him in His kingdom. What was Jesus response? TODAY you will be with ME in Paradise! Jesus said” It is finished!” He alone carried our sins on the cross and He alone will forgive us. Seek this day whom you will serve, man or GOD, religion or a true spirit filled relationship with Jesus. God loves you! Seek HIM and you will find HIM. The Bible is our truth not man made religions. God is faithful and true✨🙏🏻💖

I'm immensely, consistently thankful for how you break down scripture and shed light on it where people often miss key points, and do so in defense of the faith. This is immensely helpful to me as a Christian and it helps edify my own confidence in God's word and my ability to defend it. Thanks Mike.

We are saved by the work of Jesus, which was sufficient for all.

So the blood of Jesus is insufficient to make payment for sin, but my Hail Marys may do the trick?

We have peace with God through Jesus Christ. We have been Reconciled to God through Jesus Christ. Period.

To GOD be the glory! I've been watching your videos and it helps me a lot. Then I decided to download your videos to our computer and save it to our flash drive then watch it on our big TV down stair. You are a good preacher and talks directly to the point. We love the way you preach. Now I am downloading your video entitled Responding to Catholic Apologists on Purgatory. Your videos help a lot in our Ministry. Please make some videos and we will all download it all of them. Please always take care Sir Mike Winger. GOD bless you forever

People need to also understand that reward and salvation are used to represent two completely different things in this passage.

Mike, thank you for explaining this using actual verses. As a former Catholic, many people online tell me we must go to purgatory to be cleansed before we can experience God's presence. My instinctual answer is always, “No, you're negating the power of Jesus dying on the cross for us. Paying the ransom for us. Shedding His blood for us. He is enough, if we are saved and live our lives as He commands.” When I was a cafeteria Catholic, I just took purgatory on faith since my education in church ended around age 11. But it was easy to sin as a young adult, because I had purgatory as a fallback. That's a slippery slope. My soul was in serious danger. Had I died then, I was destined for hell. Because now I know purgatory doesn't exist. I've studied the Bible, been saved, both again, and my life is completely different because of Jesus Christ. Please keep reaching people. It's vital for salvation.

The whole idea of us needing to suffer anywhere for our sins negates the promise that Jesus paid it ALL by voluntarily suffering for us.
That is a different gospel, and Paul is very clear about that.

If we had to go through purgatory to cleanse us of our sin then why did Jesus die on the cross???

The Corinthians chapter talks about a reward for work itself, not the person doing the work ...
We are saved by the blood of Jesus "It is finished"
PERIOD

Biblically speaking, the concept of Purgatory is completely useless.

If the point of Purgatory is to "purge" sin from the believer, then it is redundant because the blood of Jesus has already done that before God. Further, once we die, we lose our sinful flesh. At the resurrection we will be given a new form. No Purgatory is necessary.

Pergatory is part of the great Roman Catholic machine where you're kept in submission of earning grace by works and paying for penance. There is ne assurance of forgiveness or salvation. Between sacraments - indulgences & pergatory our Catholic brothers & sisters are kept in this cyclical process.

The foundation that Paul and Peter were talking about is Jesus and Him only.
The foundation is not the papacy nor any other person.
We build our faith and trust in Jesus, He is the foundation and He sustains us

Could you do an interview with a messianic Rabbi about Hanukkah and the Passover and how it relates to communion or the Lord’s supper?

Nothing in RC doctrine is designed to make you dependent on God. Everything in RC doctrine is designed to make you dependent on the Church.

That knowledge will guide you when unravelling RC doctrine.

We have been purged by the blood of JESUS, PURGATORY denies the sufficiency of the cross
