From what I understand, the tone pot on the Z is passive (cut only) whereas the 1 has an active tone control (boost and cut) so that explains why the Z sounds more bassy.

Thanks for the comparison! I know most people will go with the SCH-1 as their favorite, but I think the SCH-Z has just a bit more clarity. They are similar, but I'd pick the Z!
