Little bit of background on Joost. He was creative from a very young age and also a bit different. His father said that there are no boundaries and he should follow his dreams. They always watched the Eurovision Songfestival together so as a kid he replied that his dream would be to go to the Eurovision Songfestival. Then his dad passed away when he was 12 and his mother when he was 13. For inspiration and acceptance of the loss of his parents he travelled trough Europe. Therefore he sings that the pain and emptiness stayed with him no matter where he went. He paid for mental help but it did not work for him. Still he managed to be a very positive and joyful person as reflected in this song. He sings about the song Papaoutai from Stromae that is also about missing his father. In all of this he managed to combine lot's of cultural aspects of different European countries and the Netherlands. There is even a Max Verstappen reference in the build-up. Without the layer of his personal life you will notice that a lot of elements can directly be related to the European countries. The young boy and the old man represent him and his father struggling trough life and his father being an example for him. The windmill is near where he spend his youth so also a trip trough memory lane to him. The final emotional scene represents him as a kid and his father when it all ended, the burning of the family photo and the building represents that you need to move on in life and not be stuck in the past. In the end he tells that he listened to his father (there are no borders for your dreams) and refers to him going to the Eurovision Songfestival. So winning would be optional, his goal was participation. It is a bit similar to the style of Little Big, a band that never participated and still has the most views on the Eurovision channel by a landslide.

Breaking news from Maaskantje

The hype around Joost Klein and his song Europapa continues to grow. This year's Dutch Eurovision entry entered the Top 40 out of nowhere on Friday and 'with a huge lead' at number 1. The song is also at the top of the Single Top 100 this week 'by a great distance'. The performance in the Top 40 is historic.

It has never happened before that a Eurovision Song Contest entry reached number 1 in the Netherlands before the actual party. No Eurovision Song Contest song has ever come to number one out of nowhere.

Success seems to be only the beginning for Europapa. The song is currently the most popular song on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes and Deezer in the Netherlands. Joost is also number 1 in Spotify in Belgium. The clip is currently the number 1 trending video on YouTube and is approaching eight million views.

In the beginning of the song there's a line: "I lost everything except time." I think this refers back to the ending which is a reference to him losing first his father and then soon after his mother at an early age. I don't wanna read too much into it but I think the burning resembles his whole world falling apart. But even though his world was gone, he still had time and he heeded his father's words: the world is your oyster. Thank you for your reaction and much love from the Netherlands!

information joost klein : song is Ode to father

The song is an ode to Joost's father.  In the song Joost tells the listener that there are no limits if you want to make your dreams come true and tell your story.  He also says this about it.

Europapa is about an orphan who travels across Europe (and beyond) to find himself and tell his story.  At first people don't recognize him, but he takes every chance he gets to show himself.  Europapa is a tribute to my father.  When he raised me, he passed on to me an expansive view of the world.

He also wants to say something about his act.

The Eurovision Song Contest performance will be an experience in which everything turns from sadness to elation.  When people see my act, their first reaction should be, "What's going on here?"' but only to find that they are moved.  An invitation to dive deeper.  At first glance it seems like a very happy act, but behind it lies blood, sweat and tears

The song is actually a bit sad. As others already stated, he lost his parents at a very young age. There are a lot of double meanings / connections to his parents and surely i am missing something but ill try to name some:
Like the song is called "euro-papa" because papa is dad in dutch.
He is singing that he goes to other places but he feels lonely. He lost everything except time. he is struggeling
He is giving people money but nobody is helping him. He went to mental healthcare but they could not help him.
He is talking about the song Papaoutai from stromae. Papa outai means "dad is here" and the phrase Où t'es? Papa où t'es? means Where are you? Dad where are you? check out the lyrics of that song too :)
He is also mentioning "i wont stop until they say, yes he does that very well" because he is seeking pride from his parents.
The ending is pretty clear but i think he is talking to his dad and his younger him and he tells his dad that he listend to him.
Also the burning picture and burning house stands for him closing that chapter and he wants to move on and dont want to feel the pain anymore. while he was in therapy they used burning stuff to let go the old

Joost fiatalon elvesztette mindkét szülőjét.
Édesapja rákban, édesanyja pedig egy évvel később szívmegállásban. Megküzdött, de ez az ő módja, hogy feldolgozza a fájdalmat és továbblépjen.

The song is a letter to his parents who died when Joost was still young. His father told him that since humans invented the borders, he could invent the world, his own world. And so he did! The end with the burning picture and house means that it's time to stop grieving about his parents and step into a new phase in his life.
