Have you wondered what's the difference between a 2 stroke scooter vs a 4 stroke scooter and which is a better opinion. Well, this is where I explain it in more detail so you can better make a decision between the two. There are 5 main different you should know about the 2t and 4t scooters.

Two Stroke Engine:
1. They can generate higher torque.
2. Easy lubrication due to mixing oil with the fuel. (required to mix oil and gasoline for the scooter to function properly)
3. Two stroke engines are less convenient and generate more smoke.
4. 2 stroke engines are louder.
5. 2T engines are more light weight

Four Stroke Engine:
1. Can generates less torque.
2. Less lubricating oil is requires because some oil burns with fuel.
3. Four stroke engines are more efficient and generate less smoke.
4. Four strokes are a lot quieter.
5. 4T engines are heavier than 2T engines

Two-Stroke Engines:
To start, the two main functions of a two-stroke engine are compression and combustion. This makes the scooter lightweight in comparison to other most 4 strokes. While two-stroke engines run more simplistically, their need for maintenance is usually much higher. However parts are a little on the cheaper side compared to four-stroke. So since 2T scooter tend to be lighter and faster they have an stronger surge of power. Which on the down side can make them a little more difficult to ride and handle.

Four-Stroke Engines:
Being more complex compared to two strokes, the four-stroke engine has four main functions: intake, compression, combustion and exhaust. Unlike two-stroke engines, the controlled power makes four-stroke engines are more stable which means there's less effort to ride. Also four-stroke engines, needs maintenance less frequently.

Basically, yes there's a different between them, but another key note you might want to keep in mind is that a smaller two-stroke engine size equals to that of a higher four-stroke engine size. For example a two-stroke 125 cc engine is practically the same as a 4-stroke 200cc. So in the end, It all comes down to personal preference since one is not technically better than the other. However, before you make your decision, you should cost of maintenance, consider experience, the size of the scooter, your over all comfort zone when handling a scooter. Either scooters will bring its own pros and cons. At the same time, you want to know what you're getting into before you buy.

2t for the win, who wants a quiet bike?

Pointe finale. North Americans will never have to make the decision between the two engine configurations as anti-pollution laws passed has but totally killed the 2stroke passenger vehicle market.
Side note: You must have one of the best memories to able to remember all those little details. Wow!

i think most 2 strokes these days have an auto lube now just add oil to the tank and go, as for smoke mine barely has any smoke at start up after that none, as far as maintenance i have owned both and have had to do more maintenance on the 4 strokes oil changes, spark plug, gear oil change, valve adjustments, cvt belt, the only maintenance on a 2 stroke is spark plug, gear oil, and belt, i do believe 4 strokes have longer running before you have to rebuild, but like you said it comes down to personal preference

Just a note from a northerner. If you live in or ride in a cold climate a 2 stroke can be MUCH harder to start and foul easier due to incomplete combustion. They are also very hard to drive safely on ice and snow due to the higher torque and powerband. But in the warm weather they are alot of fun! The best way I describe the difference to people is 2t is like a weedwacker Zippy, fast, light, fun to blip the throttle lol. And a 4t is like a lawnmower. Steady power, easy to maintain and gas up, but may be feels a bit more bland to push. 😋 looks like you stopped to check out that bigger bike in the end of the video lol. Good job shauna

Girl.... you haven't felt the powerband of the mighty 2 strokers when it 'hits the pulls like turbo, YO! Not to mention fewer parts to go wrong, easy to rebuild, in theory makes twice the horsepower of 4 strokes.

Good presentation and comparison video. I love the classic and retro 2-Stroke scooters, but yes, lots of work. Given how much I commute on mine going with a 4-stroke, or fuel injected bike was easier for me. I hope they can keep the 2-strokes more modernizes so they're never completely eliminated.

The Thing i dont understand. Everybody in the states thinks you have to mix gas in a 2-stroke. Yes that is true. But 2-t scooters have been having a seperat oil tank for oil since the year of 1990. And a healthy engine Will only eat 800ml of oil in around 1200-2500 KM. so...
+ modern 2 strokes here in Europe. Have catalytic units build into the exhaust and so on. So they dont smoke like an old 60s moped. Ofc most ppl get rid of that junk to gain performance. But still. Sorry my english.

been highly considering getting a scooter(since i guess that's the right term for them, been using moped and scooter interchangeably for years, oops) your channel has helped out a lot. I'm currently trying to learn all i can before i just jump into something and regret it later.

Wroooong... Most of 2T scooters got oil pump which injects by itself... So you got big tank for gasoline and small for oil...

If you are an enthusiast, the 2T is the only way to go, especially one with a manual transmission and clutch, like my Genuine Stella. It's a real MACHINE, 100% mechanical, and 100% controlled by the rider. There is no beating that 2 stroke powerband, sound, rider interaction with the machine, and that wonderful exhaust smell. If you just want a transportation appliance, get a 4 stroke with a CVT. Or take the bus.

i have a 2 stroke yamaha and i am happy with it, it is not that loud, it is loud before i move it 1-2 miles, smoke make only before the engine is getting hot.

Hey, what happened to your dash mounted gopro? Also, as you said 4T's are more reliable 2T's are getting rare with EPA regulations. And good luck finding someone to set the carburetor on a 2T. As always, great video. Your bubbly personality, and intelligence gives me hope for our future. 😇

We don't have to mix the oil and gasoline any longer in a two stroke scooter engine. Why ? Because nowadays the two stroke scooter engines use an oil injection system. The rider just puts some two stroke oil in a small container and the oil is automatically injected into the engine to lubricate the engine. Many years ago people with two stroke engines had to mix the oil and gasoline. I believe that only chainsaws and weed whackers need the oil and gasoline to be mixed nowadays. I believe that with the advancement of technology, even chainsaws and weed whackers won't need the oil and gasoline to be mixed. I own a sthil weed whacker and I must mix the oil with the gasoline. What a F!?)#%G pain, not to make a mistake and burn the engine
