▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ notes ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

▽ list of components:

NAS: Qnap TS-453BT3-8G-US
10G card: ASUS XG-C100C (RJ-45, PCIe x4)
10G Ethernet switch: ASUS XG-U2008 Desktop Gigabit Switch (10x RJ-45)

If you don't connect your NAS to the network and the internet it's also way safer because. Plus you won't need to think about firewalls and stuff. I'd suggest to not connect a NAS with sensitive data to the web.

What about a FreeNAS box with a second hand 10Gb?

You can build a cheap PC using Linux and use it as a server / nas and router. Doesn't take much, and a few add-in cards for 4 port network cards, or 2 port each, plus extra internal sata connections. Then a case to store additional hard-drives and extend it as you go. Minimum drives 2 to start, but 3 would be better because in raid 5 you lose 1 as redundant. I'm working on designing my own home network right now as an upgrade with a utility room, wires all in one place, etc... I probably will spend over 1k but I'll be running pipes, etc.. so if I have to upgrade in the future, lines will already exist in the wall and pipes to make routing easy.. all wires to one central location, and I'll probably run a fiber line out to the road. I'll also set up a wireless router station in the great room on the wall that shares the circuit breaker on the opposite side for central access. I may also just run all the wires next to the circuit breaker without a room and have internal fiber run as well - but cat 6 / 7 should be enough for 10g, but I do want room to grow as stuff becomes available.

The big issues I find with most of these videos is it lists the parts, no diagram or anything that I saw while skipping through.

you should have gone with SFP+, it's a lot cheaper you can do it without a switch but if you want a plug and play feel to 10gbe then it's will still end up costing you over £500 but less than £1000.
