Dude, this was insanely good for beginners. Seriously, I’m a editorial photographer, but, this was extremely helpful.

Bro I thought at first I was like "no this looks good" but I realized it was the filter and effects that looked 10/10. Adding the good lighting dropped my jaw

This lesson should always come with the caveat, "Unless you want them to look pretty." High key lighting and deep focus get so little love when people are learning the basics.

what you said "bad lighting" is something i often find in old classic films, they have lots of shots shot with same style and it looks damn good, film called Cure comes to mind first, lot of japanese films of 90s and 2000s used it

"I don't think it's bad lighting—" it is bad lighting if you as a camera director failed to read the atmosphere, or even the script. 1st lightning is for the scene where emotions were running high, while the 2nd is perfect for suspenseful scenes, or even dramatic moments.

I still have a lot to learn with this lighting stuff

I like to add a hair light as well, for that golden age look.

Nope i don't think it's bad lighting I think they call it dumb side lighting which gives the subject a more approachable feeling and what you just demonstrated is called smart side lighting which gives the subject a more dramatic look.

Both are good it's not bad lighting it depends on the mood and type of frame you are trying to achieve

Not bad lighting. Just depends on the mood you're trying to create.

I disagree that the 1st one was bad lighting. Its perfect lighting depending on the scene and mood of the film. The 2nd example is terrible lighting for a comedy scene but perfect for a dramatic scene.

I have no idea what all those words mean, but I can tell how much of a difference it makes

Not bad lighting at all — good tips but both types of lighting you showed have their uses.

His beginner lighting is so good I wondered how he got it before he said it was bad.

That light is NOT next to the camera. It's to the left, perpendicular to the axis of the camera and elevated. Otherwise why is the head casting a shadow on the neck?

That 2nd light is past 90° from the camera. That's a BACKLIGHT.

As done in pretty much every movie this century no matter the setting or genre.
