7 Ways Simple Shapes Can Improve Your Drawings

Shapes are a fundamental element of visual language, in fact, it's not possible to make a picture without them! In this lesson we’ll introduce shape language, the idea that shapes have “personalities” and can convey different ideas. Simplifying shapes will be a crucial skill you’ll need to tackle as an artist, as it makes it easier to judge proportions, fix mistakes, invent new poses, among many other reasons. As you get better with basic shapes you’ll be able to build on complexity by combining simple shapes and adding relevant details to design engaging and recognizable characters or objects.

In geometry, shapes define the outline or the boundary of an object. A shape is defined for an object or any external surface or boundary, apart from other properties such as colour or material type. For example, a blue ball, made up of rubber materials is round in shape.

Are their any classes that use YouTube videos? I took a drawing basics class awhile back but gave up because the videos wouldnt work well due to my weak internet connection. I live out in the country, so YouTube videos are the only ones that work well here for whatever reason.

This one video literally opened up my damn mind and potential. I draw 3 times better than before. I had good form, body and line art but the one thing that I couldn't grasp is why can't it translate over to my shape design. I was treating shapes with disrespect. Never considering them in the final piece but ultimately they're very important. Thank you for teaching what school couldn't
