I always forget this rule while drawing and my character becomes the opposite of what i want them to look

Honestly, the square guy looks the most friendly. Because of his soft downturned eyes.

reminder that you can also break shape language as well, both in character design and for storytelling purposes

That circle looks really cute indeed though

I find intentionally messing with shape language can make very interesting characters and stories. Like making a character with mostly messy pointy shapes but making them kind and friendly changes expectations and can make them more unique and intriguing.

Bill Cipher being a literal triangle as a villain 😂

Honestly, the square guy looks the most friendly. Because he looks like Tom Selleck. The round guy looks nervous and could be rude on account of it and the triangular dude... well enough said.

while this is a common shorthand that is here for a reason (cuz it works) I’m also really impressed by designs that go the opposite way. like, how can you make a round, fluffy character menacing, or a sharp metallic one comforting? It’s something I want to get better at.
fun semi related fact: kirby the game character was named so because (among other reasons) his name sounded strangely harsh when spoken with a Japanese accent, so to pair it with such a cute character was a subversion of expectations at the time.

Honestly Stan, that would also be my reaction if someone presented me with a spider (real or fake).

I'm interested how our brains are able to associate shapes with certain personality. There has to be a history behind it, just like colors.

Another interesting design choice: the eyes sort of accent their designed personalities.
Circle man has round, upturned eyes, suggesting a bouncy optimism.
Square man has downturned eyes that seem more grounded.
Triangle man has sharp eyes looking directly at you.

We learned that triangles are yellow, circles are blue and squares are red because triangles are sharp and so is yellow apparently and blue is smooth like a circle

You can also use shape language for subversion of expectations. I like to make my round characters brutal/violent and my spiky "traingle" characters sweet/friendly.

Okay but that is the roundest, cutest spider butt I've ever seen. That lil fella is a circle through and through!

finally, a short video on art that’s actually useful and not just “do you draw like this? *doesn’t explain anything and just draws*”

This reminds me of the three soldiers in Mulan! They all have those exact same personalities.

“Triangles can be dangerous” *has flashbacks to Gravity Falls* yes… yes they can
