How To Maximize Misery | The 4 Stoic Sins

Virtue is the path to a happy life.

One can characterize Stoic virtue by its instrumental as well as non-instrumental value, meaning that Stoics don’t act for personal gain, but rather to benefit the whole, even if this includes the rejection of pleasure and the endurance of pain. However, at the same time, this way of life leads to eudaimonia, and thus, living virtuously is rewarding for oneself as a byproduct.

But what if we don’t live virtuously and what misery comes from that? In Stoic ethics, we find the opposite of virtue, which is vice. Vice can be subdivided into four elements. Obviously, following these elements will lead us astray.

This video explores these 4 ‘Stoic sins’ and possible consequences.

My grandfather used to say, "If you are not sure what to do look at the options. The least attractive or most difficult is probably the right choice". That has served me well for the last sixty odd years.

I've had no income in the last 6 months and still looking for a job and being rejected by so many companies and businesses. Sure it's hard but I've come to work on myself to learn new skills and not to be sad and angry with rejection. I've only used rejection to propel me into valuing myself more. Great things will come eventually and I'm keeping the faith. Amor fati and memento mori is what I tell myself everyday. God bless and may you overcome your struggles whoever is reading this.

Be just, not unjust.
Be courageous, not a coward.
Be moderate, not indulgent.
Be virtuous, not a sinner.

“It’s ruinous for the soul to be anxious about the future and miserable in advance of misery, engulfed by anxiety that the things it desires might remain its own until the very end. For such a soul will never be at rest—by longing for things to come it will lose the ability to enjoy present things.”

Had a very bad addictive relapse to pornography last night (apologies for the tmi) and I needed this. I need to remind myself that living intemperately isn't just bad for myself, it prevents me from improving the whole.

I've only commented a few times, but wow...you're the closest to the stoic ideal, The Sage...keep living, teaching and being the best you can be, so we can, too....just don't let my praise go to your head. Stoic on, brother, stoic

The past few days I was struggling with the assumption that I was failing others. I needed the Courage to accept vice is an inherent part of humanity, and now realize some people won't change, at least not any time soon, regardless of our virtuous efforts in 'trying to help'. So Let Us live virtuously and happily, Thank you kindly Einzel.

Edit: Reflecting upon my words as I write this. Was a bit sentimental when I wrote them due to a weary heart, but in all honesty still hold them to be true, though devoid of the ill-will I felt when initially writing them; such is the way of a loner, to bear the pain of others as his own... Live virtuously

Sometimes I may have
too much courage- recklessness, or to much courage- cowardice. And it is bounded with moderation and wisdom too. I think all virtues are connected between themselves and if you lift one it helps lift others, also if you lose one others become shaky and unstable

There is a big black hole right in the middle of me. And no matter what I do I can’t fill it. I have tried a lot of things. I can’t stand to be alone. The stoics and this channel have helped. I am slowly getting better.
