Let's Get Organized!
Over the years, I’ve changed my quilt fabric organization system several times. No matter what I tried, I kept running into the same issues. One of the biggest problems was not knowing where certain fabrics were. This often led to spending far too much time digging through piles to find that perfect print—or worse, buying a fabric I already had because I couldn’t find it.

Another challenge was that I couldn’t easily see my entire fabric collection. I’ve learned that if I can’t see it, I won’t use it.

After a lot of thought, reflection, and some brand-new bookshelves built by my wonderful husband, I finally created a system that works for me. I love how it looks! In this video post, and in the accompanying blog post (link below), I’ll show you how I organize, fold, and roll (yes, roll!) my yardage, fat quarters, larger scraps, and small scraps into one cohesive system.

Great video! Loved your tips. I never thought to cut the comic book boards in half for smaller cuts. So smart!

You are just full of great ideas Kris. I can see I have some more refining of my fabrics to do. My friend Deborah and I laugh and often say we feed off of one another. We sit down and work out our sewing problems and situations together. I feed off of you too. I must be getting fat with sewing information, tips and tricks by now. I love to learn from you. Sue. xx

Thank you for this video! I just started getting fabric for my first quilt and a friend dropped off 3 bankers boxes full of fat quarters or larger😊. She just texted asking if I was ready for more. Love her and am excited, but I was overwhelmed with how to organize these. Lots of love from the Pacific Northwest 🧡

Love your system. Perfect timing for me. I’m very visual and need to see stuff but needs to be appealing. Thank you

I got a shoe box full of feed sack fabric that was rolled & tied with strips of muslin at an auction. Your way of organizing makes sense & saves alot of time searching for fabric needed to make projects. Looking forward to the next scrap buster project.

Great video and great tips. When I began my quilting journey and buying fabric, I wrapped my fabric on comic boards by color or collection. I found when we were moving that my yardage had a dust streak and sun damage that I had to cut out when I used the fabric. As my quilting journey continued, I realized that I am a project quilter. So when I fall in love with a fabric collection, I pick a pattern, buy the fabric I need, the backing I want to use and then I little extra for pillows. I then store it all together in a Sterilite container. It has been my saving Grace, we moved to West Africa for my husband’s job. So I could choose which project I wanted knowing I had everything I need. There are no quilt shops where we live so it has been a blessing. I really don’t like scraps because I never know what to do with them, although I’m considering using my scraps to make an EPP project that I can take with me when I travel.

I love your scrap system! I do some very much the same. I’ve tried the system of cutting the smaller scraps, starting with the biggest you can get to the smallest. I NEVER keep up as cutting is my least favorite of the quilting process let alone dealing with scraps! 😝 Thanks for the video!!!❤

Great tips I would have never thought to roll fat quarters, but that's awesome. Just Get It Done Quilts and The Quilted Forest have great scrap buster ideas.
