That is a great explanation. My dad is a retired auto mechanic and always had me put the lug nuts on by hand until they are on good. Then use the impact and torque to spec. He always stressed to take your time because we are not in a big hurry. I appreciate you being honest and posting this. Not many people could admit their mistake and learn from it.

I am one of the least mechanically inclined persons I know. Kudos to you for being courageous enough to post your blunder online. I’m sure it will help many people. In my case, I will continue to have someone qualified to do my maintenance and repair work. On a different note, I do love my ‘20 Accord Touring 2.0T. That’s how I came across your video.

I commend you for putting this video on YouTube. This is something we all can do very easily, like you said, especially when we are in a hurry. None of us is perfect and thank you for putting your pride aside and posting this to give us all a gentile reminder about what NOT to do!

My father ingrained in me to start every thread by hand and get a few turns on first before any leverage/power. For reasons I'll never understand, that lesson has withstood the test of time. What your experience has reinforced in me is that rushing a job will ultimately end up costing you in the long run. To this day I make similar mistakes. The last job I was doing, my wife came to the garage and commented about how long I was going to be, sure enough, pressure was on and I made a mistake that cost me time to recover from. Focus. Calm. Clarity. If you don't have those, step away and take a break and come back when you do - or if you don't think you'll be able to, take it to a shop where they can make it their problem. Sorry for troubles, but thanks for sharing.

You are not the first, or last to do this. Great Video, that a lot of people need to here.

Appreciate the heads up Chad.
I personally stripped the lug nut trying to get the wheel off, even by hand. I was in the process of painting my calipers red. Using the stupid lug nut key that comes with the vehicle's wheels. I ended up having to buy a whole new set of lug nuts keys because I stripped one of four that came with car.

Side note, i am a native of Colorado. Resident for 37 years. Welcome.
I've been watching damn near all your videos. I appreciate all the info. I absolutely love my Honda Accord and I'm in the process of making it "Mint".

Thanks for sharing. I too have made this mistake. It was an easier fix on the truck I was working on but it still was a pain to fix.

General rule of thumb that I use, is to start bolts or nuts by hand. Using an impact or electric ratchet to start a bolt/nut is risky. All it takes is one skipped thread and now your bolt/studd/nut is ruined.

I made a similar mistake to this recently that cost me big money. Never rush a job!

First I just want to say, THANK YOU!! For making this video!! I have a 2021 Accord Sport SE, and you may have saved many Honda owners like me, from making a costly mistake!! Also, Honda dealerships are going to lose a lot of business, for charging customers those absurd repair cost!!

$1, 100 is a lot. But I’ve had $4, 000-$6, 000 repair quotes at BMW 🤣

I learned this lesson the hard way after cutting the studs down to run 20mm spacers w/ the factory wheels. It looked awesome until I went with aftermarket wheels with the proper offset. When it was all said and done I could have put $750 towards the cost of new wheels. Ugh!

On everything that I take apart & put together small or large I always hand twist the nut or bolt on till I can’t anymore and then use a wrench for a little torque

Every one of us has screw up stories. Thanks for sharing so we all don't add this to our lists.

5/2023. The damage to which you refer has been "done to us" before, by regular garages making tire repairs or replacements. We had to spend the big bucks on having broken lug nut bolts drilled and removed on our 2001 Accord. I know it was from these mechanics that put the tires/wheels back on using an impact wrench, either without adjusting to a correct torque value, or ignoring the settings entirely if there is even a torque setting on the wrench. I just rotated all four of our 2017 Accord tires, using a Craftsman torque wrench set for 80 ft-lbs on the lug nuts. Anyhow, thanks for your reminder video.

A product recommendation: Ryobi impact wrench P261 @ HD

I too used to use an electric impact but I got tired of dealing with extension cords. The Ryobi has 3 speeds. One or two turns by hand to start the threads then zip the nuts on using the low setting without worrying about over torqueing. The high setting has more than enough torque to remove the nuts.

Been there, done that on a '17 Civic, rear hub assy. Luckily I was able to get out the offending wheel nut stud with a bfh and tapping it out. There was enough clearance behind the rotor assy that the stud dropped out when tapping it out. I managed to put a new stud in the same way and pull it through the rotor until properly seated. Lesson learned. Now I don't use an impact wrench, unless I'm merely removing the lug nuts.
