An "Hypervisor" is installed over the server BIOS (Basic Input Output System). This is the first layer operating system. It can also override any operating system on the next layer Therefore, the BIOS system is overall responsible for the services to the next layer operating system. The "Hypervisor" divide up the service into usable "chunks" of resources in virtual API calls. However, it still has to allocate resources based on Call List.

I get that esxi is a type 1 hypervisor because you install it like you install an os but hyper V? That runs on top of windows server/workstation how can it be that it is not a type 2?

I believe KVM falls under hosted hypervisor category i.e. Type-2 Hypervisor.

KVM is a Type 2 Hypervisor, NOT Type 1, as identified in this video.

Since all hypervisors cited in these video uses modern processor virtualisation technologies (AMD-V / Intel VT-x), those categories (types) doesn't really apply anymore and all those Hypervisors behave the same now. Little differences in performance we can observe are only matters of codes optimizations.

Your type 1 hypervisor image is wrong. An OS is not required.
