In order to qualify for VA Benefits and Compensation, Gulf War service is active military duty in any of the following areas in the Southwest Asia theater of military operations at any time August 2, 1990, to present. This includes Veterans who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2010) and Operation New Dawn (2010-2011).

VA presumes certain chronic, unexplained symptoms existing for 6 months or more are related to Gulf War service without regard to cause. These "presumptive" illnesses must have appeared during active duty in the Southwest Asia theater of military operations or by December 31, 2026, and be at least 10 percent disabling.

In spite of a thorough literature search, the Volume 10 committee found scant evidence to warrant changes to the conclusions made by the Volume 8 committee regarding the strength of the association between deployment to the Gulf War and adverse health conditions. Thus, veterans who were deployed to the Gulf War appear to have an increased risk for mental health disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder, depression, and substance abuse, as well as Gulf War illness, chronic fatigue syndrome, and functional gastrointestinal conditions. Indeed, the constellation of symptoms and symptom clusters referred to as Gulf War illness.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is seeking nominations of qualified candidates to be considered for appointment to the Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses (RACGWVI) (hereinafter in this section referred to as “the Committee”).

Deadline for Presumptive Consideration Period Nearing End

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Generalized anxiety disorder, depression, and substance abuse (particularly alcohol abuse)

Gastrointestinal symptoms consistent with functional gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia

Chronic fatigue syndrome

Gulf War illness

Fibromyalgia

It's no longer 10 years from your discharge date to file a presumptive. We now have until 2026 Dec.

I had my gulf war illness denied when I retired in 2015 even though I saw combat during desert storm and my artillery unit was smack dab in the middle of the oil fires in Kuwait. So much so that we had "black rain" coming down on us, not to mention the multiple times our chemical alarms went off during the ground offensive.

I already had 10% for tinitus. Under Gulf War Presumption I got approved for IBS, Rhinitis and Sinusitis. Had to go to C&P exams but I brought my va records, 2 colonoscopy results and pictures of bloody stools. Then the VA added anemia. So I totaled out 60%. I have a colonoscopy with the VA to determine If I have Ulcerative Colitis. If diagnosed that will put me in the Hundo club. If you use VA presumptives, you need a diagnosis. Also applied for CRSC. Not automatic and received 60% in addition to my va disability. Not bad for an 65yo 20 year retired Airman.

Yep. Been in those necks of the woods (Israel and Saudi Arabia). Got my claim in for PTSD, sciatica, cervical condition, migraines, IBS, sleep distrubances and allergic rhinitis. Still waiting to hear back as it has been in evidence gathering for sometime now dating back to Aug 2023. APTTMHY

Thank you for doing this!!! I'm a Desert Shield/Storm Vet. I had tried with the VA so many times that I gave up. I have chronic allergies and sleep apnea. I live in Colorado, do you know of any groups assisting vets to file their claims?

I think of this as a MUCMI video. MUCMI is tough as a Dr will need to use "unspecified" ICD10 codes. 38 CFR 3.317 specifies the following 13 categories of signs or symptoms that may be manifestations of an undiagnosed illness or an MUCMI. The list of categories is not exclusive:
joint pain
muscle pain
neurological signs or symptoms
headache
neuropsychological signs or symptoms
gastrointestinal signs or symptoms
abnormal weight loss
fatigue
sleep disturbances
respiratory signs and symptoms (upper and lower)
cardiovascular signs or symptoms
skin signs and symptoms, and
menstrual disorders.

Sleep apnea cannot be presumptively service-connected (SC) under the provisions of 38 CFR 3.317 since it is a diagnosable condition. If claimed, sleep apnea must be considered on a non-presumptive SC basis.

This is a long haul process filled with as many denials as you could possibly imagine. Worse, I've had suicide suggested in various ways 3 times by VA representatives while being told the doctors didn't believe me, were annoyed by my persistence, or that they were going to actually lower my previous comp rates. Don't give in. Keep pushing. Lawyer up. It takes more persistence than I had the aptitude for with all the additional annoyances that stress causes on GW symptoms. Still fighting now, but perhaps in the next couple of years it will be fully resolved.

My husband who passed away in Oct of 2023 was in the area. Kuwait, Iraq, Afganistan etc. Had rhinitis, IBS and many others. We were in the process of doing CP exams at the time he passed. VA said it just closes claims. He already had a rating for IBS and a few others. What do I do now? He was at 95 percent.

1:11 gold. Focus here troops. You'll get a few 0% but that gets you through the gate of SC.

I have never heard of Presumptive for Sleep Apnea, Migrans, back, knee, ankle, or many of the listed.

Do know you can get Presumptive with documentation showing you have been to.the combat zones listed in the video for Gasteo, some cancers, some respiratory and some others but you mixed in some.tjings i have never hears called Presumptive

The VA makes this process far too difficult for those of us who put our lives on the line which we hand out billions to migrants with free housing, free food and free phone. Seriously?

It’s always amazing to read all the denial, denial denial for people actually been there done that what’s wrong with the VA it’s like the purpose is to find a reason to deny people is million complaining all over the Internet…. Instead of have doctors they have nurse practitioner billion dollar company cannot afford the real doctor.

Do you have a source showing that sleep apnea and tinnitus are presumptive?
