Not worrying about appearing "showy" when my dog's well being is on the line.

I just encountered 4 of them with my dog, I’ve never been so scared. I just yelled and back away facing them. Thank god then stop Following us and just stared from a distance. My dogs only five months so it’s scary.

I’ll be showy to protect my dogs. I don’t care what people think. We carry a Louisville Slugger and a can of pepper spray. We have lots of coyotes here in Palm Springs, CA. A few evenings ago, a woman’s Maltipoo named Chloe was snatched out of her yard at 5:30 pm after a coyote hopped a wall to their back yard. Her husband and neighbors ran after the coyote but no luck. I think they made the mistake of leaving the dog unattended. I was horrified when I heard the story. I was actually depressed all day.

Literally happened to me yesterday with my 75lb German Shepherd in South Carolina. Got stalked by a coyote (probably 2) for a MILE! It always kept its distance but when i stopped, it stopped. I walked backwards and yelled and my dog barked (not sure if the barking helps or makes it worse?). VERY SCARY!

What should you do if a coyote starts stalking you? I had that happen with my dog tonight. I did everything wrong (turning my back, speedwalking away) I luckily just made it home, but the coyote followed us the whole way.

We have a lot in my neighborhood, I go walking in the morning and night (not too late) and we only encountered one that was a few meters away but in a bush so I ran with my dog.

Thanks guys. I usually like to go for walks at night when it's nice out. Sometimes I will walk to my husband's job which is 3.6 miles from our house. Usually I wear my long coat, so if I see a coyote I could probably hold the jacket open and make myself seem bigger to them.

one coyote was plotting to get my dog after he saw me take my dog out to use the bathroom… the coyote was literally waiting at the side of the house thinking we were still outside..

I have a rechargeable razer flashlight...it is very loud. I carry it around in my pocket while moving about the house because I often see coyotes a backyard away in an empty lot next door to my neighbors house & even if my dog isn't with me in the yard I use the tazer to scare the coyotes away so that they don't get to even see my dog... The gate is only about 4.5 to 5 ft tall for my backyard as well as theirs which the coyotes up here can easily jump which scares the crap outta me...don't ever want to take a chance. Get a tazer flash light IT WORKS.

Watching this because I came across two this morning on the bike path in south Burlington with my dog. They were well enough away but I had to turn around and fast walk the other way. Going to carry a grocery bag with me now. I walk early every morning and the yotes are definitely more active and present in my area this time of year. I have a 65lb border collie but still nervous to come across more than one coyote.

I took my dog out last night and he saw the coyote before I did and I thought for sure my dog was going to charge at him, luckily i raised my voice and my dog came straight back to me. I thought my dog was going to get killed. One of the scariest experiences of my life truly.

For the second time in a month I just had a large coyote follow me and my dog across about an acre of my open land at a distance of about 7 yards. My dog is large and well trained and obeys orders and I always have my Shield on me. I never thought I might have to use it against a coyote attacking me or my dog, it was quite terrifying.

How do you get your dog to backaway slowly with you? Special trick for that? I have a large dog, 55lb goldendoodle.

I kicked one in the chops about 6 months ago. I am not scared or intimidated by them. For years I would usually see one a day but now I'm seeing packs of about 3 or so. I live in the city and have pets which may attract them. About four months ago someone left the gate open and there was 5 of them in my yard. I grabbed a baseball bat and chased them out. I started using wolf urine to keep them away and did not see any for about 3 and a half months until last night. When I spotted two of them approaching my yard, I gave chase down to the end of my block. They started coming back after I went back into my house so I chased them again for 2 and a half blocks. I find they are timid when it comes to humans. If you give them an inch they will keep approaching especially if you show fear. I have always chased them. My only fear would be a rabid one perhaps. Whoever said these things can run close to 40 mph makes me suspect. That could be the case but coyotes are lazy runners and it seems like they trot instead of running. It also seems like they run like they walk. Coyotes have a distinctive track unlike dogs. Coyotes hind paws step into the front paw track creating what looks like a single track. I'm talking about snow or mud tracks of course. If my cat was with me, I would pick him up just to be safe and still give chase. Don't let them intimidate you or they will approach.
