I have been wondering about the size difference between cicadas and locusts. Boy the lady in this video will swoon if she saw a swarm of locusts. They are 3x bigger and the devour everything in their path.
So now I’m wondering if the cicadas are for the feeding all the small critters running around. What an amazing event.

Illinois seems to be cicada central with 17-year locusts. I don't live there anymore but I grew up in Park Ridge and still remember cicada year 1958, my brother was 7 and was bringing them into the house, sticking them on his face (and others'), on his bed, anything they'd "stick" to and my mom was NOT happy. I remember her saying she was glad he'd be 24 when they returned.

That tree is naked compared to my tree. Entire property has holes every 4-5 inches in the ground. I have to wear ear plugs the noise is deafening! and pull them off of me before I come in....17 yr and 19 yr Cicada emerging together only every 221?

Question ... I live in the NW subs. I planted 6 young trees, so I was concerned and covered all 6 trees. It is the end of May and I still haven't seen my first cicada. Do cicadas stay near where they emerged? Is it safe for me to uncover my trees?

We know they are annoying, but they're a blessing.
They are to remind us that earth is still healthy at the moment.
