HTTPS vs VPN: what’s the difference? | NordVPN

HTTPS — or Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure — makes sure that others can only see what websites you visit, not what you do there. Isn’t that the same as a VPN? Kind of — but not quite.

HTTPS uses TLS encryption to secure data travelling between your browser and the website. It also checks whether the website you’re visiting is legitimate. Crucially, this means that your internet service provider (ISP) still logs where you go.

The easiest way to check if the site is using HTTPS is to have a look at your browser’s URL bar. HTTPS sites have a padlock icon in front of their address.

On the other hand, Virtual Private Networks (or VPNs for short) create an encrypted tunnel for your data. This means that ALL of your traffic is hidden from your ISP and others. All they see is that you’re connected to a VPN server.

As you can see, HTTPS doesn’t provide comprehensive encryption. It also won’t work unless your browser and the site support it. However, HTTPS is still absolutely necessary for sites that ask for sensitive information, like your banking details, so always check for that padlock!

To fully enjoy privacy and security online, you really need both — use a trusted VPN and only visit HTTPS sites if you can.

Hello. Please tell me. https - encrypts traffic, what does it mean? If, for example, I watch a movie online in a Yandex video - will it be seen by a third party - which movie? Or google queries? Or what I look at on the pharmacy website?
