I was thinking about when I welded a tractor wheel as I watched this; and then you said to watch your tractor wheel video. I had to chuckle. I hadn't planned on rebuilding the tractor wheel as I had called the local tractor place and they said it would be in tomorrow, so I took the old one apart and pulled the wheel off and made a mess of the old wheel, because it was trashed anyway. As soon as I got the everything apart and up on jacks the part store calls and says they don't have any wheels and are not sure when they can get one. I worked all day in my driveway hammering, welding, grinding, cutting and cursing. When I finished and aired it up all was good. Then the phone rang and the guy said my wheel had arrived.

I have a vw truck axle with two rims ready to make a trailer out of laying in the back yard. I didn't realize they were 5 lugs till I was working on my other trailer which has vw rabbit rims on it. Hadn't moved it in a couple years. went to air it up this spring and found two were rotted out and leaking. Found three almost new ones at a semi retired VW scrap yard near me. Nobody else had them. I know old civic rims are close but the center is too small, but easy enough to machine out a little. The hard thing is finding 13 inch tires too. I bought some trailer tires. I hope they fit. Haven't got around to it yet

The rim on our 1990 FORD van had a rust hole in it and I had to keep adding air every week, the junk yard wanted $75 for one, I can't weld so there is no spare now but the other rims on the van are good.
You have a great talent, it would cost a small fortune to pay someone to do what you did.

I've got three of those rims. I tried selling them for months. Now I am using them as rollers for a GTI I parted out and I'm getting ready to scrap.

$42.86 and whatever gas money to go 200 miles and back.
It'll be my first ever welder. Time to learn!

Good idea, I have an old kubota tractor with a rusty rim I can't find I will try to fix myself now

1) I Wonder if the dynamic balance would be thrown off, but time will tell I guess.
2) while you are at it, you could balance the rim to perfection using welds to only need to compensate for the tire.

Good video, I like this kind of stuff, showing that it CAN be done. I watch many Pakistani truck videos, and they too show how things can be done on a limited budget, and like this they repair things that we normally scrap, because, well the value just doesn't warrant it, unless it is unreplaceable. Enjoyed the video, nice to see Ginger running again, cheers!

Use bed liner spray on the inside of the rim. It helps with sealing the leaks, I had a chrome rim that was peeling and the tire shop said that was an easy way to seal it.

I had a melanoma cut out of my thumb after many years of welding gloveless. Welding gloves also protect you from heavy UV. Please keep that in mind, and be safe.

I did the same to two beetle rims . Not even close to being as neat as yours. But they were only temporary, so I could manouver it around the yard, and they already had tubes in them, so I didnt have to bother about pin holes either
