No sooner had General Qassem taken the reins of power than he too was marked for death. To carry out the deed, the Ba’athists needed a triggerman. A hit squad was formed around Saddam, and meticulous plans were made to carry out the assassination on October 7th 1959 in the capital. But when the big day came, Saddam and his conspirators forgot the carefully choreographed plan and began spraying shots wildly into the street; a short gunfight ensued in which one of the assassins’ was killed, Qassem took a bullet in the shoulder and arm, and young Saddam was shot in the leg.
