Not saying he was great, but is Iraq really doing better now?

It's such a trip that this is already considered in the "history" category. It feels like it just happened

Weird part is they never found any weapons of mass destruction.

My family grew up under Saddams regime, witnessing both his rise and fall from 1979 to 2003. Some of my family members were even martyred in the Iran-Iraq war in the 80's and then again during the Iraqi uprising in 1991. I vividly rememeber Saddams execution, and I never asked my family about how it was growing up in his regime. Finally one day I decided to ask, and their answer wasn't much different to the answers of many other Iraqis. They described Iraq under Saddam as feeling much safer, organized and stable. Saddam was by far an angel, but he kept Iraq intact and sovereign. Iraq had respect and pride during his regime, even in other arab countries. Comparing Saddam to what the coalition did in Iraq makes him look innocent. Ultimately I believe Saddam was just used by the west, and when they felt that he was getting too much out of line of their interest, the U.S. used 9/11 as a pretext to justify a regime change in Iraq. Anyone who doubts this should look up U.S. involvement in regime change around the world, and "Operation Northwoods". The invasion of Iraq and his execution doesn't suprise me at all. It's what the United States has been doing for decades without anyone being able to hold them accountable.

Saddams was supported fully by the United States. Until he wasn’t useful anymore. I don’t think he was a good guy but his accusers were not much better.

It’s so crazy knowing he wanted to originally become a lawyer and ended up with what we now know. Such small details can change peoples lives forever.

I turned 19 two days before the towers fell. I had just arrived at ft Knox to chase that college money, and this whole story feels like a lifetime ago. I never did go to college….and no I’m not some tough guy seal dude my name is meant to be a literal little boy seal 🤷‍♂️ I was just a dusty 19D who finds himself ranting how it feels like not that long ago I guess. Hearing he was executed sort of felt like the end of a strange chapter in my life. We should not have tore that country up like we did idk. Thanks for reading.

The problem with Iraq post-Saddam is they couldn't get people to work back the country due to "de-Ba'athisation" of the country. All of the government workers were required to be a part of the Ba'athist party, and removing them all was ensured to cause the collapse of the country that still lingers to this day, and even gave birth to another extremist group due to the collapse of a proper government

Even in Germany post WW2, they still required some people who was affiliated with Nazi before to continue working for the newly formed government due to their experience on how to run a country before and during the war itself, yet they couldn't do it on Iraq, which is a shame

I remember seeing this on Live Leaks in middle school, god I miss that site. I probably shouldn't have been on there at such a young age but it was a proper old school internet page. Everything is so sterilized now.

It has always fascinated me that Saddam was executed for such a relatively mundane act, a massacre following an assassination attempt and not for any of the many thousands he killed with chemical weapons in the Iran/Iraq war.
It was pointed out to me that they needed to try him for a crime that he hadn't carried out with US backing, as any of the war crimes such as killing 5, 000 in Halabja with VX nerve gas was done with nerve gas that the Americans had illegally provided him, which could be used as an embarrassing defence in any potential trial. That was around the same time as the CIA was funding and arming Bin Laden to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan, and Regan was bribing the Iranians with covert arms sales, to keep hold of US hostages until after he had won the 1988 election.
The USA spent a long-time sowing seed of sectarianism through often bloody geopolitical manipulation, and from 9/11 onwards they've been reaping the consequences. Watch George Galloway address the senate in 2004 to see the USA exposed as a marauding and lawless agency of greed, deceit and slander. Bush and Blair also belonged at the end of a rope; the illegal US invasion killed 1 million Iraqi civilians.

Biggest plot twist in history. Just when I thought they were looking for Osama Bin Laden for his role in 9/11 they captured and executed Saddam .

He literally told the judge “I’m not defending Saddam I’m defining Iraq” and tbh look at Iraq then and now they wish they had him back

Gassed the Kurds so no, I don't feel sorry for him. But the invasion of Iraq should never have happened.

Fun fact: there are varied unconfirmed accounts of saddam's last meal, a topic just as controversial as any part of the trial. Some say it was boiled chicken with rice, a glass of water with honey, and smokes, others say he refused to eat the former, others say he had a burger with fries, others say he had cheetos.
