The Discourses of Epictetus - Book 4 - (My Narration & Notes)

The Discourses of Epictetus are a series of informal lectures by the Stoic philosopher Epictetus written down by his pupil Arrian around 108 AD. Four books out of an original eight are still extant. The philosophy of Epictetus is intensely practical. He directs his students to focus attention on their opinions, anxieties, passions and desires, so that "they may never fail to get what they desire, nor fall into what they avoid." True education lies in learning to distinguish what is our own from what does not belong to us, and in learning to correctly assent or dissent to external impressions. The purpose of his teaching was to make people free and happy.

I've been listenening to these things for a while and they've helped a lot over the years. But, over the past few weeks been feeling lonely and sadly heartbroken though I don't feel I have valid reason. Just really hard to bite down on. Keep turning to these tho. Hoping it'll subside. Cheers yall

Before I listened to this book, I listened to you reading Miyamoto Musashi's "Book of 5 Rings". Every time your voice tapers off I expect you to say "You must study this well" LOL. I get flashbacks to listening to that book during some of my training every time you say the word "spirit". Anyways, thank you very very much for this Robin. I struggled to find the time to read the book, and you made it so much easier for me to stay consistent. Take care!!

I can't find your Audible for the Discourses, only the Enchiridion. Is there someplace I can buy/download the full Discourses? I love this channel and would really like to show my support, also, you're my favorite reader out of all the one's I've heard and I would like prefer to have your version of the audiobook, if possible.

I did become a slave and I did discover terrible things along the way. Now I am trapped. I know by small changes I might be able to get out of it but I’ve become worse then the corpse, the biggest prostitute, a walking zombie of the sort.

Even if I take small steps, I take larger ones in the wrong direction.

No I wouldn't, Mr Epictetus, because it's within your power-of-choice/moral-purpose to decide that you will assent to all of those things and decide that they are not a misfortune, because it is only oneself that makes one misfortunate, and it has befallen you as Zeus wills. No one can force you but yourself, so you have already assented to these things.
Furthermore, as you said before, it's not right for a man to take on and share the miseries of another, so where is the reason to get angry, let alone kill, the man who does these things to you?
