Best movie I've watched for a long time. Easily and quickly reminded me of how lucky the modern society is because of the heroes of the past.

Mel Gibson mentioned that the part about faith was essential to this movie, because "in war, soldiers relied on something that was greater than themselves" to move onward. I don't know how to react when I see the comments fighting about whether God was in this or not, or whether this was an effort solely done by Desmond. When I read about how this was an extraordinary feat, I know it was, I also know it wasn't by Desmond's effort alone. He never wanted the credit, but always said it was God's. To me, it was both his effort and God's blessings. Hand in hand. No coward would've been able to do this, but no man could've done it on his own strength.

A Japanese solider recounted of how whenever he pointed his gun at Desmond, the gun would jam. He could never shoot him.
Desmond recounted of how he learned the special knot that would help him lower down the injured soldiers- but he only remembered it and God showed him how. He didn't learn it in training camp, but somewhere else where he lived (I can't remember the details for the life of me).

Was Desmond still a man who had values to uphold? Yes. He had temptations, he surely did. There was once where he was extremely tempted to throw a grenade into the cave where he heard Japanese soldier voices coming from there- just to protect his soldier mates. Did he do it? No, he knew if he compromised, he would be in great trouble. All of these things I'm writing are not on my imagination. I've taken these from the hacksaw ridge documentary where he was interviewed in 2003.

If you think that Desmond did it alone, I have to put it to you that you're wrong. He wanted to save people, I would never doubt that. In fact I admire that. Take note tho, he even said, when he lost his Bible, he was so lost, so so lost. He felt so lost, and that's why there were soldiers determined to get back the Bible for him. There's significance in this, and it's not just some kind of book of history or "fairy tales". If you've never really genuinely read the book, how can you even reject it? Desmond prayed and read this book every day. Just as war was real for Desmond, so was his trust in God. At least respect that, and put down your own personal grievances against religion for once. This was a personal, true encounter with God for Desmond, and I think nothing you say can ever change that or take that away. His testimony stands. :-)

It's as if a good, absent friend showed up at your door after some 10 years. Welcome back Mel.

A Seventh Day Adventist, a Christian who trully followed Christ in putting others before him. And God protected him all that time, what a miracle!

I would rather listen to what actually Mel speaks to the cast than this sugarflavor music

This is the best war movie I have ever seen, better than saving private ryan etc.  And Mel Gibson has done it again.  Apocalypto was also a masterpiece.

Just an update on my comment. For those of you who prefer Saving Private Ryan, Private Ryan was magnificent for its time, but I didn't engage and get emotional with the characters. I didn't give a damn about private Ryan or any of the other characters. Perhaps due to the fact that it was loosely based on a true story. Hacksaw Ridge embodied far more accurate events, therefore making it more captivating and endearing for me.

I cried watching this movie. I never thought of wanting to serve in the military after watching this movie. It's so inspiring knowing that he is a real person.
