Mum tries out Elementary OS Luna Beta 1 (2012)

Diana is at it again and this time trying an operating system while its still in beta testing. Overall this is the fastest operating system we have encountered so far but sadly its not her favorite. Mostly she is put off by the strange naming convention of the programs pre-installed with the operating system.

Tasks Given:
- What time is it?
- Write, save and open a text document
- Open a web browser then maximize it
- What's 48x32
- Customize the way your computer looks
- Download, install and open an application that interests you.
- Turn off your computer

The mother in this video only ever uses Windows XP running with the classic win95 theme. Would you like to see her try out Linux, Mac, Windows, Chromium OS or other operating systems through history such as DOS? Then give your suggestions in the comments section.

Give this video lots of likes, views, favorites and comments if you want my mum to try out other operating systems. I am open to any operating system suggestions you give especially if these videos go semi-viral (over 100,000 views). This channel is dedicated to me "introducing" people (mum, dad, me) to different operating systems they have never used before and leaving them to suffer in confusion struggling to do anything in an unknown computer environment... or see if these other operating systems are better than Microsoft Windows.

As an elementary developer, it's always very eerie (though very rewarding) to see someone's mom on the other side of the world using software (Switchboard) I wrote in my bedroom.

These videos are great! Diana is a natural. Very revealing as to what users face when they try a new OS. I love how much she dislikes W8, and the DOS video had me in stitches. I use/ have used all of them and it's good to see first reactions. Great series, and your Mum is a cutie!

This is the first time I have watched your videos and I have to say quite frankly, your mom is spot on with regard to the average usability of most operating systems. They are not as easy to use as the developers would have you think. Usability has definitely come a long way in the Linux camp and it appears Microsoft is going in the total opposite direction. Thanks for posting this. =)

You definitely need to get her to try Elementary OS 0.4.1 Loki. They've polished it so much more, and removed all of the weird names(except for Scratch), and added their own AppCenter as well. It's really come a long way and is a better experience. She might find it easier to use than the Mac.

Knowing how the elementary team focuses on design I'm sure they can be trusted to set it up nicely. Or another option would be to have something like the mint menu with the little description of the application in the bottom right/left corner or something like that

Yea, these videos have taught her how to use a range of operating systems as well as become less obsessed with windows xp. She is willing to upgrade to vista right now or even swap to max OSX mountain lion.

She didn't see google or a search engine upon opening midori. Instead was a tester icon or something which is not familiar to her. She asked for Firefox because that is the web browser she always uses and is familiar with. If she can't have windows xp anymore she wants to at least have her familiar beloved Firefox. I am sure midori would be fine however if she used it for a few days.

Actually, after installing ElementaryOS again and looking through my package set, the only thing that elementaryOS shares with Gnome is GTK+3, and the afformentioned libmutter. Besides that, it is its own complete beast.
Likewise, being able to convert Ubuntu to a different distro with a script is nothing special, nor detracts from Elementary and their hard work. You can convert Ubuntu to and derivative with or even back to Debain with "small scripts", or even just some pretty basic apt commands
