Mum tries out iOS 6.1.2 (2013) on iPad 2 (2011)

Finally moving away from the desktop computer mum tries out iOS 6.1.2 on an iPad 2. It's highly portable, fairly simple to use and kinda fun too but... sadly you can only natively use iOS on an ipad (unless you jailbreak). With the lack of being able to run other OS's such as Windows or Linux and being unable to run desktop applications this puts down the device quite a bit. Will the Microsoft Surface Pro fix this problem for Diana? Find out next time on OSFirstTimer!

I sort of miss the old IOS look, it was more colourful and better to look at, now a days all we have is the "Windows 8" Look as I call it. Anyone else agree?

She has lots of lower paid jobs however due to the amount of jobs she has and the amount of time she works for she gets an average amount of money. She doesn't waste it though and saves most of it while spending most of what she doesn't save on the house.

The surface pro just arrived today. The reason I did this first is so that I could show her an iPad (which I'm giving to her and my dad) and show her why a surface pro is better and fixes the problems she had with the iPad. I will do an unboxing of the surface pro in 2 hours and upload it in 8 hours. In 48 hours I will upload an osfirsttimer video of my mum try out windows 8 pro on the surface pro.

But parallels mobile for ipad is a Remote Desktop app that allows you to remotely access virtual pc's running on a desktop pc. Windows or mac won't actually be running natively on ipad and can't since it uses an arm processor.

Not all of the apps in the multitasking tray are open. When you close out of an app, it stays running for a couple of seconds and then closes on its own. The app tray is for recently used apps. That's why the apps have the loading screen even if you don't close out of them, unless you exited the app fairly recently.

Her laptop doesn't have much battery power so she can't leave it on all day long and open it when she likes. The iPad however is light and convenient and can do that. I've had the iPad in a state like that for a week and its still been running without being charged.

But the laptop does t last long in that state and the ipad practically never has to be turned off. That's why I compared it like that because my mum turns her laptop off all the time but with the ipad there is no need. Unless of course you need to reboot while jailbreaking.

Yes you can suspend the pc but the battery won't last as long while its suspended. Also it's a slower process to wake a computer up from being suspended than it is to simply open an iPad up.

It's the pro. Australia doesn't have them so I had one imported from another country. It took 3 weeks to arrive.

in the beginning it seems you were mixing the quick "boot" of the ipad compared to the laptop, but in my opinion, you shouldn't praise the ipad just for shutting down the screen and going into standby, laptops can do that too with same results
also note that laptop is older than the tablet

The version of ios 6 on iPad and iPhone have different apps installed. Its kind of silly the iPad has no calc by default.

Ios6 on iPhone has a calculator but the default iOS 6 for ipad has no calculator unless you get one from the App Store.
