Line 6 HX Stomp versus 5e3 Tweed Deluxe! Same IR!

In this video I compare the Line 6 HX Stomp Fullerton Model with a handwired 5e3 Tweed Deluxe clone from Trinity Amps. Both the model and the amp use the same impulse response (IR) created from a Weber 12a125A, a Shure SM57 and Royer 121. I also give some tips on how to dial in the HX Modeling as well as thoughts on the differences between modeling and the real thing!

I love what you have been doing! Great playing and sounds! FYI 5E3 tweed deluxe is a redundant term. It might not be known to most people these days that the older fender models designations were like this; 5 means 1950's. E means its the A, B, C, D, E (5th circuit revision of that design- circuit and cabinet type). 3 means it is a Deluxe. The models were numbered such as: 1 Champ, 2 Princeton, 3 Deluxe, 4 Super, 5 Pro, 6 Bassman, 7 Bandmaster, 8 Twin, etc...
From a glance at the schematic of the 5C3 circuit, I quickly noticed that there is a negative feedback loop from the output transformer back to a point between the phase inverter and the power tubes. This will reduce distortion and clean up the sound. I'm surprised Fender was using this technique so early on, but he was always a hog for that clean sound. The 5D3 model was the next in line and had removed that negative feedback loop and would have been more similar to the gritty 5E3 sound I expect. That 5C3 negative feedback only affected the power section, so the distortion in the preamp tubes would be similar across the early Deluxe amps. I would guess those circuits would sound more dissimilar as you turn up the volume. The volume pot is located after the preamp stage on all three.

Interesting - thanks! The modelled distortion is the giveaway; funny how all that processing power can’t quite get it yet!

Great illustration Michael! Love that you edited the clips in short bursts so we could hear the difference more easily. So, have to ask...do you gig amps and pedals or Helix? I go back and forth, but prefer amps as I "hear" myself much better from a Dlx rather than a "Dlx" through monitors...

Definitely like the IR amp tone over the HX but always impressed with how good that thing sounds

I could be wrong, but isn’t the Grammatico in the Helix a 5e3 circuit tweed model? Love the tones you are able to get out of these units! Love my Helix and HX stomp

Another great video! So here's a question. A "complaint" or statement I keep reading is that IR's tend to make whatever amp or model you have plugged into it all sound the same i.e, you plug a Fender amp into a Vox 2x12 with blues and it's going to pretty much sound like a Vox, more so than if you plugged the amp into a real Vox 2x12cab with blues.
One other question, if given the opportunity, do you still prefer to mic up cabs for recording or are almost almost always using IR's now? I'll be moving into a house with space to actually mic up amps(first time in many many years), but I wonder if I will really do it. I've been using my Torpedo Wall of Sound plugin and the cabs in my hx stomp for all of my recordings for several years. Once it's in the mix of the song is that minute difference really audible between the two?
Thanks again for the video Michael!

Hey, I built a 5e3 kit from Trinity, and I love it. Did you get it with the VRM or not? I find Steven's VRM helps tame it for smaller gigs.

Hi Michael,
What video is where you talk about using MIXIR3 to blend IR's together?

Very very close! Some of these clips sounded almost identical. I think almost all comparisons between helix amp models and real amps, helix always seems to lack a bit of body and presence. Sometimes it's very subtle, sometimes a bit more obvious.

I Will be grabbing that IR Friday
Thanks for the Share

Damn I actually hear more of that greasy overdriven tubes giving up sag coming from the HX stomp with the Les Paul. When comparing my 62 Princeton with my kemper i do feel that the low end sag is missing from the kemper, however, in this video I actually preferred the HX stomp

are you running anything additional after the stomp or is just direct?
