This is a follow up to our proposal for accessing the big void in the Great Pyramid from the so-called air shafts, using a robot. We now present a physical prototype of a new pyramid robot which, with further development, may be able to do this.

Sorry about the delay in releasing. Prototyping is hard to predict: R&D, wait for parts, R&D, wait for parts etc. Addressing potential comments: in the lucky case of needing to drill only a few feet, a drill-extension mechanism is worked-out and accounted for in the robot's design (width issues considered). But R&D can't proceed without knowing the final hole length. Measures against potential obstacles (granite, sand, gaps etc) would not be implemented in the first iteration, unless they're actually encountered in reality. Otherwise costly R&D would be wasted addressing things that don't exist.

would recommend looking into oil drilling equipment
they have very similar requirements, drilling through stone with an effectively infinitely extensible system
for this case you could likely easily use 1/4 or 1/8 npt pipe that is readily available for the drill string
as the tube will already be hollow, using air to clear cuttings would be an easy solution
The issues I see are that we cannot take advantage of the weight of the drill string as the bore is more horizontal than vertical and the geometry of the cutting end likely needs to be changed, as classically the cutter in such drills is more spherical than conical.
One solution would be using an impacting bottom unit that utilized the compressed air used to clear cuttings with a more standard type of impact drill bit. This would significantly increase cutting speed by tens of times and significantly reduce the forces needed to push the bit from the robotic frame with the clear disadvantage of increased vibrations.

FYI there are off the shelf RC cars that are designed for low speed crawling. They are relatively cheap (~$400), have 4 wheel drive and can easily climb a 35 degree slope. Their low gear ratio also makes them capable of holding position on a slope. Traxxas TRX 4 sport is a good example.

You’re the best ! Welcome back, hearing in such detail about the upcoming excavation. It’s so wonderful.

Neat idea--few things to possibly improve: A tracked vehicle provides better grip than tires. A worm drive would prevent backlash so its much less likely to roll when not under power. Modular drive platforms would be good for vehicles with multiple jobs but since this vehicle would have one job, building it to suit would out perform anything bought off the shelf. And as you say, the costs would still be a fraction of what other big projects have cost. Maybe scale down a directional boring rig like what is used to install gas and water lines?

When Gilles Dormion drilled in the Great Pyramid he was not allowed to use a water-cooled drill for fear that water may cause water damage to any objects found. Although the geometry is quite different, I suspect Egyptian officials would have problems with using water to flush out limestone dust.
I have thought of three solutions to the dust problem, although I think the first two are bad.

1 - Windshield wiper. A brush moving on a gantry to brush the dust out of the way. Does not need to reset, can push some dust up and some down. Gantry could be longer than the robot, allowing the dust to be pushed very far away. A telescoping gantry could be even longer, but would come with added complexity and risk of getting stuck.
pros - fairly simple, manual control would be easy to make
cons - may cause dust cloud, and can only move so much dust before it becomes a problem, seeing the dust and the brush may be a problem depending on the number and position of cameras and lights

2 - Fan. I'm thinking a computer fan, simply blows the dust up the shaft.
pros - even simpler
cons - will cause dust cloud

3 - Dust Buster. A small vacuum cleaner mounted the robot or on a trailer to suck up the dust
pros - can remove dust entirely from shaft, just back out and empty when full, very little dust left in shaft to cause issues for further exploration, simple to use: suction funnel is placed beneath the drill and turns on when the drill is running
cons - more complex construction, likely to require custom parts and will add much more weight to the robot

I think 3 is the best option.
