27:24 Why is the use of fear in islam senseless and ridiculous? You made another very clarifying analogy: “Imagine a scenario where you have a dispute with your neighbor over a fence and you go to court. All you need to do to prove that you’re right is to bring the deed to the land with the dimensions and show it to the judge, do the paperwork and then you win, because you proved the truth. Why doesn’t islam take that road? Why doesn’t Allah prove the truth? Islam goes to court and instead of showing the papers, it tells the judge: I have a lot of weapons at home and I have people waiting outside the court right now who will harm you if you don’t rule in my favor. If islam is true, why does Allah have to hold a gun to our heads?”

Another excellent analogy:
35:13 Imagine having a partner who threatens you every day with violence. They don’t hurt you, they haven’t physically hurt you yet, but every day they tell you: “if you don’t love me, I’m gonna torture you, but I know you love me, you’re one of the good guys.” Would you love that person? You would be terribly afraid of that person. I don’t see how you can have love with fear.

Only rich people can follow all the pillars, especially the hajj. In my country poor people have to wait for 30 years to get the visa, at the same time celebrating politicians and celebs boasting their third or fourth in the social media. Ied Adha is the time for the biggest bull sacrifice competition. Islam love social status.

26:42 You made a great analogy to understand why someone would make excuses for their prophet doing the most horrible things: “If someone held a gun to my head and asked me: “Is slavery good?” I don’t know if I’ll be principled enough to say “no, slavery is bad” and then get shot. I think I would do what I need to do to survive. That’s the existential threat that believers are on every single day.”

a while back me and my brother had a brief conversation about religion, and i mentioned that i didn’t believe in god as portrayed in most spiritual beliefs and am agnostic. he asked me why i didnt believe, and i basically just said that i found it hard to believe because it seems very ridiculous to me and when you look at most religions beyond the surface it gets contradictory and messy /disturbing very quickly. when i asked him why he believes despite clearly not being very engaged, because i can tell that he isnt that invested in religion, he told me that it was because he was “just afraid”. that has honestly bothered me to this day and i unfortunately can still relate because the biggest thing i have struggled with leaving islam is the “what ifs” about being wrong and burning in hell forever. i hope we can both overcome this fear eventually and be comfortable with our lives, its the least we deserve after having a childhood so charged with religious trauma.

As someone who grew up atheist and still struggles with existential horror over the finality of death, I find it darkly amusing how religious people managed to invent an afterlife - a comforting, desirable thing - only to turn it into a source of fear and anxiety. You’d think they would go with the carrot over the stick on this one, the neutral reality is plenty scary.

I was taught juz amma & tabarak the final chapters in quran when I was a young girl. The Quran teacher would do tafsir on verses from these chapters, which were full of punishments that used to terrify me as young girl.

Yes i 100% agree, all muslims in my country do prayer 5 times a day, zakat, pilgrimage, wears hijab, etc not because the want to go to heaven but cause they just dont want to be tortured forever by their all loving god, heaven is just a bonus, yes islam is raised by fear

What you call as “fear”, I would call as “gaslighting”, ,, and “gaslighting” Is needed to convince the masses into believing into something which they don’t believe initially

I wish I knew then what I know now.

I am knee deep in Islam now (family) but I no longer believe.

I feel like a sober person in a room full of drunks 😢

My doubts began with doubt about creation in light of evidence of evolution....13 years later my crumb of doubt has become an avalanche!!!

Very well said Aladdin. I remember the fear factor was one thing that lead me away from Christianity and I experimented with other religions in high school. I bought an English translation of the Quran and found very quickly that it had the exact same issues as Christianity. I didn't even finish it before deciding that it couldn't be true.

I left Islam 15 years ago but the fear of grave interrogations, being eaten by giant scorpions, hellfire, etc. keeps me pretending to still being Muslim. But the worst one is fear of being rejected by the family and friends.

29:36 “Allah is powerless without muslims, just like Jesus is powerless without christians. If people just stopped believing in that idea, you’ll see that life goes on …. The only power that these gods have is in our belief in them and our action based on that belief. These gods don’t seem to be able to pull any strings without us. You don’t have to fear Allah. It’s just an idea and it can’t hurt you if you don’t believe in it.”

This was excellent. I escaped the Jehovah’s Witness cult 2 yrs ago after 49 years in. They instill a lot of fear in people too.

A God that creates followers that will fail his laws and must be punished is a sadistic psychopath.
But this again just proves to me that Seneca was correct : Religion is considered by the masses as true, by the wise as false and by rulers as usefull. The last one is the important part, that is what gives rulers carte blanche to do whatever they want, because an imaginary ultimate power cannot pink slip them.

Really good analogy. You should make an animation of that and post it as a short

islam has mastered the twin principles of lust (heaven) and fear (hell), that's why it's so insidious

The last words that Kant spoke were 'es ist gut' ('it is good'). He sensed the death coming, said those words, and died. No fear, no begging for mercy, no belief in 'nothing'. Just a genuine understanding of the world we live in.
