Load testing a car battery

The new MR2 battery went REALLY flat due to standing while the bodywork was done, I charged it up, time to test its condition!

The MR2 hadn't been driven for a long time due to the bumpers being taken off for paint and the TRD lip being fitted. My new battery went flat (down to 6 volts). car batteries don't really like that too much and after charging it was time to test my new battery voltage and load tester. Load testing a car battery was easy with this piece of equipment.

Other tools I use:

Good idea coloring the + / - in with red and black. My wife or her son hooked up the cables backwards trying to jump start the Miata last fall. It didn't blow up the battery but it cooked most of the fuse box and killed the alternator. The battery in in the truck under the rear quarter panel so it's really difficult to see the posts. I think I'll mark the part of the battery that's visible as to which post is which.

I've bought the same brand two months ago: No problem...even after not using the car during two weeks.

A good pretty cheap multimeter for car work and basic 240V stuff is uni-t ut210e, found on eBay for around £25, has an amp clamp and pretty useful for quick current tests of alternator output and things like fuel pumps fans parasitic draw ect .
Second good low/mid price choice is holdpeak hp-770hd, can buy amp clamp use with it .
One thing you'll find on some of the better branded load testers is they calibrated better, I got an old clarke one I had over 18yrs and it spot on .
You will see the green strip has cca scale that you match to your battery and a temperature compensation correction value of 1 step for temp below 0degC
Good ones have use instructions on a big sticker on back .

Nice one mate. Good recovery! Many times a battery will just drop like a stone in cold winter it's because the battery would have run flat at some point in its life and dropped a cell. I still remember the good old days of topping up with non-ionised water and acid tablets! I've got an old snap on load tester handed down to me. It's well built and has lasted years.

Looking forward to seeing the Mr2 kitted out! Luckily I've never really had battery problems with my cars. The BMW hates a low battery though so she has to be babied if she's left sitting for a while 😂
