Your description of hooking the positive/red up first and then the negative/black second, both to the battery, will not stop a spark which can explode the battery if explosive gases are given off. The proper way is to hook up the positive/red first to the battery, as you describe, and then the second negative/black to a heavy ground on the engine that is away from the battery where gases could exist and be ignited by a spark, if one occurs . This same procedure is used to jump a car, with the last connection being made on the car being jumped since the running car is more likely to be generating gases since the alternator on the running car is charging the battery on the running car and charging a battery often causes explosive gases to be generated. When jumping a car, both connections on the running car can be made on the battery since the circuit is not complete until the fourth connection is made on the heavy ground away from the battery of the non-running car. Saying again, when jumping a car, the last, of the four connections, is to a heavy ground, that is away from the battery on the non-running car . . . and that last connection made, is the first connection removed when the jumping process is complete i.e. for the same reason that if a spark will occur, it will be when the circuit is being completed (at last connection) or the circuit is being broken when the first connection is removed. Your Blue Point battery load tester looks like an Associated battery load tester made in St. Louis.
I just ordered the Associated model 6031 from Amazon on 10-15-2024 $157.98 though they do make several cheaper models.

My brand new battery tester smoked a bit on the top, resistor after only about 3 seconds. Is that normal? Suppose it gets hot and is burning off something from manufacturing?

My load test came out to just under 11 volts. Good enough or need replacement ?

Maker starter click while cranking engine. I bench test starter and it work. Battery half year old and check voltage and it say 12.4 volt. What could be wrong?

so, does the battery have to be fully charged for an accurate load test?
i just went to get my tires rotated and ford service claimed to do a load test without my request. they said the battery is bad but i've never had any indication of a bad battery. also, wouldn't they have to CHARGE my battery before the test? and why would they charge my battery for free just to do a load test a never requested?
i'm suspicious of a scam. should i be?
also, where's the date of installation on batteries? if i knew the date of installation it might give a clearer idea of whether the battery might be in need of replacement.

I think your meter is screwed up seeing as it says over 14 volts and you had a charge of 13

You got it wrong @ 1:13 . Red one comes off first.. Always. When applying; red goes on last.. Always.. Think about it - the entire car is negative grounded. Black connectors on negative posts dont create any grounding danger. But hooking up red to positive posts first energizes the equipment, making it vulnerable to accidental grounding.
