TIPS for BEDROCK: 1. Remove the trap doors on top of the platforms (don't worry the spiders aren't an issue) 2. Use solid blocks instead of slabs. In Bedrock slabs let light in 3. Add another layer for more spawns 4. Place torches on top of the build to stop mobs spawning there 5. (Optional) Build over an ocean far from land so there's no chance mobs can spawn below you. Hope this helps!

IMPORTANT! if you are getting terrible spawn rates, make sure to replace the floor and roof slabs with actual blocks. As mentioned in other comments slabs let the light in.

More tips for Java:
The ceiling slabs, the slabs on the bottom layer where the mobs spawn, and the slabs where the water is, need to be replaced by blocks or double slabbed, otherwise they let light in.
Check in spectator for ANY weird light glitch looking areas those are slabs letting light in
Remove the ladders, they block mobs really hard, if youve got iron+ sword, make the "pipe" 21 or 20 blocks instead, some mobs die on fall because of water bobbing.
Make sure the top is covered with torches
Keep a bed up there, phantoms will come otherwise.
use a mod such as journey map or a plugin like set home to fast travel up there its painful otherwise
if not, use water elevators, pain to set up one that big but huge time save
water pool at the bottom, expand the chest and hoppers soon, it quickly fills due to the efficiency of this farm.
If you REALLY dont want to get wood, you dont need yhe trapdoors on the spawn platforms, they just prevent spiders you do need the one in-between the platforms or they wont fall.
Excluding the excessive slabs and the ladders this is an insane farm and a huge improvement on the basic one.

Pro tip: set up a grindstone and use it to get extra levels by disenchanting the armor and weapon drops. Also gives you something to do while waiting for mobs to spawn.

Another tip... bring more blocks with you then he said at the beginning. When you placed it wrong and it falls down after you remove it you will not have enough blocks to finish it.

It works. Don't start building it on top of a mountain, you'll reach the build limit. Building it anywhere else is fine. I started at y64 and it works fine. Place torches under the farm if you're gonna afk for a long time, or many mobs can spawn

A cool thing I found for anyone wondering is that if you wait until there are some creepers and skeletons then crouch on the left or right of where you stand to farm (where it goes down by a block) skeletons shoot and kill the creepers so it is a way to get a ton of music discs too.

I love how it looks like the blocks place themselves, so satisfying, I love your editing skills

If anyone wants to turn this into a quick music disc farm, build a platform on the same level that the chests sit on. If you stand on the platform, hug right where one of the stairs and the other block meet. The skeletons will see you from the inside and start shooting at you. They’ll hit creepers sometimes, and you have yourself a music disc farm!

If you build it on the deep ocean it works better. The only place where mobs can spawn is in your farm and not in underground caves, so you will have grater rates. Also, if you want to add more modules, you won't have to worry about building limit. Also: I know it's an EARLY farm, but if you can make the two rows of blocks of the tube from obsidian, you will be much safer in case you accidentally make a creeper explode.

note for anyone using bedrock who's already made the whole farm, change the roof to blocks and not slabs and instead of replacing the lower platform, place blocks underneath the platform from the outside. yes you use a lot of cobblestone but it's worth it

VERY IMPORTANT IF YOU'RE BUILDING THIS:

creepers can blow up and break the farm and items you have in the hopper chests, and to prevent this you can block up all sides and leave only 1 window for killing mobs. Also try not to stand too close, back up 2 blocks or 3 and you should still be able to hit the mobs. To increase spawn rates, increase your simulation distance to maximum (32 chunks). hope this helps ;)

Tip: remove the ladders and replace the stairs above them with a full transparent block, like glass or scaffolding. This way the mobs won't be able to pathfind/resist the current as it pushes them off the edge.

EDIT: Yes I am aware that some of the mobs will die of fall damage. I fixed this by raising the collection system by 1 block so that the mobs will fall 1 block less. This seems to have virtually made their survival rate 100%.

Tip for Java: This is optional but I added a water elevator to make going up and down much faster.

Works on bedrock but...Change it:
1. Remove trap doors on solid blocks. 2. Replace steps with glass blocks and delete the ladders nearby. 3. Make four spawn layers not two. 4. Add torches on top of structure. 5. I decreased my 4x4 drop-column to 18 or 19 blocks because mobs would fall and die when they drop 22 or 23 levels down. Now they live and only take 1 stike to kill.

All this increased my output by x2.

Pro tip: if you replace the four slabs on top of the hoppers where the mobs are gonna land, with camp fires, it’ll kill them for you and still put the items in the chests so you can completely afk for things like (arrows, bows, gunpowder, bones, rotten flesh) but you don’t get experience this way.

A very nice and simple "xp farm" for those of us who don't like things too complicated!

This farm works incredibly well! I do suggest not to build it on a mountain though as the build limit exists, I built on slightly raised ground but it worked. Doing this in hardcore was nerve wracking hahaha (I don't have elytra or strong gear yet, I just want xp for enchantments). Good build though :]

edit.

I died due to enderpearl glitch and the void :’)

(Edit again: I built this on a server with friends! Works perfectly once again :D )

Edit again again: Just a tip, later on if you don’t wanna keep using the ladders to get up, you can make a water elevator and then a drop down one :] (just remember to put water at the bottom of the drop down one)

Thanks! Great editing, straight to the point, and a list of materials. Rare to find a video like this.

I have made this xp farm a few times now and I love it. That said, here are some recommendations. Use solid blocks on the top, as slabs let some light through making the top level less productive if not completely useless. Make a pillar of blocks or some fence or something in the middle of the platforms so that mobs can't drop from higher levels straight down to the slaughter area, the instantly die since they fall more than 22 blocks. This will force all the mobs to fall into the water channels and then be directed down the long drop. LEAVE OUT THE LADDERS. They aren't needed for the water mechanic and mobs/items get stuck on them and prevents them from falling. Every once and a while a mini zombie will get out and attack you. That isn't a problem if you're there and actively clicking, but if you're afk'ing to get xp, they'll kill you. To prevent this, tame a small pack of wolves and keep them with you (and make sure they are fully standing up, not sitting down or they won't be able to help you). They have saved me several times. Be sure not to crouch when killing, or they will see you and a creeper will ruin the fun lol. Oh, and I'm on 1.19 java currently.
