A reading of Joachim Hoffman's "Stalin's War of Extermination" highlights the fact that, while yes, Germany had ambitions to expand into the east for living space, there became an awareness that Stalin was preparing to commence a full out invasion of Europe to spread "the revolution".

It was either attack first and try to throw the Soviets off balance, hopefully negating their numerical advantage. Or, do nothing and let Stalin unleash his armies, which most nations outside of Germany wouldn't have been able to mount any real resistance against.
