Why I (gen z) use an iPod classic + playlist reveal!

My iPod: white iPod classic 5.5 gen 80gbs. It’s chunky, not slim!

I really love this thing. I always get compliments when I’m out with it which is cool bc I think it’s past the point of feeling outdated and it’s just officially retro now 😌. More and more people are starting to appreciate digital minimalist principles.

I also feel like I need to say it again but I am absolutely positively NOT anti modern technology or even anti smartphones for that matter. I am very blessed that we have these items and I am simply exercising my options to pick and choose how and when I use them.

Offline is the new luxury.

I totally agree with you, the problem is not modern technology itself, the problem are the corporations behind this technology wanting our attention 24/7 to profit from.

I've never streamed music. As a late Gen Xer in the 90s, I started off with cassettes and then went to CDs shortly after. In the mid 2000s, I got an old free PC from my mom's work and installed a CD burner and extra hard drive in it. From then on, I started to rip all of my CDs to MP3. For the past few years, I've been mostly downloading most of the newer music I purchase. Everything is dumped in a 256gb flash drive and I stick it in the dash and hit shuffle. Here's the advantages I found. If I lose cell service, the music doesn't stop. And nobody can ban the content that's on there. And no subscription fee.

Having songs from the Baby Driver soundtrack is so real lol. I’ve wanted an iPod classic since watching this move back in 2019

I remember watching the iPod classic at the mall when I was probably 14, too expensive for me and my parents so I always used cheap alternatives. Then I bought my first ipod shuffle 4th gen 2gb (which I adore) and from that was a total escalation, now I use several ipods and, with the spare parts, perform several mods on them as a hobby. I think that at this point it's an addiction 😂

I recently bought a iPod nano 7th gen for the same reason as you - staying away from my phone. It’s so cool to have this tiny little dedicated device and it means when I’m going to family events/out with friends etc. I can leave my phone at home and still stay connected to my music. Love it.

This channel is underrated. All the points in this video made perfect sense while still having good audio, being interesting, and something I’m interested in. I have never been the type of person to just listen to music, but maybe if I took the time to download music on an iPod to listen to it, I would enjoy it more. Subscribing immediately to your channel was a no-brainer. I loved this video pls never stop <3

Also your degree sounds so cool!

I love that you mention a "sweet spot" that can be subjective to a lot of people, because I feel like that boils down what I'm trying to do. I love that there's so many options, but for once in my life, I'm making a conscious decision opposed to just letting whatever is around or new be what I use. I know what works best for me may not work for everyone. Being proactive about the tech I enjoy, such as making playlists to listen to, or figuring out what I'm going to watch on my TV for the next day or so (I put my non-youtube visual media on a flash drive and play it from my BluRay player instead of sifting through streaming), feels not only more involved and closer to a hobby, but I feel a certain sense of ownership over my free time. I think even just the whole act of being able to zoom out and making this stuff less convenient to use has so much value in making what we do feel more deliberate and meaningful. I feel like rethinking tech and it's place in my life has me realizing this process is much less like losing an old friend, and more like taking a vacation from a toxic home life 😂 I don't think I'm gonna come back to where I was, I think I'm going to inch closer and closer to my vacation spot until work forces me to get closer again 😅 (okay that analogy got away from me lol)

I have the same iPod but in black. I installed Rockbox on it and load up FLAC files. The sound quality is great. With Rockbox you can also mount directly to your computer and can drag and drop files so no need for iTunes. I almost sold this a few times but always chicken out. I rip my CD collection to FLAC files and swing by the thrift store and pickup cheap used CDs which I stream with Plex but load up files onto my iPod.

I am also changing my mind. I recently bought an ipod classic 6th, improved the battery and put a microsd, to put all my mp3 repertoire. With that, I'm slowly getting rid of google music (I don't like spotify). During work, it's impossible to leave the cell phone aside, but at the gym or when I'm waiting in a queue, I feel that the iPod is doing me good, because I can focus on the music without worrying about the online world

I recently picked up an iPod 5th gen and a small mp3 player for the gym. I'm slowly moving away from streaming services and cutting down time online. Just the other day I picked up a CD and took the time to relax and listen to it and it was a chill experience. I didn't feel that mindless feeling I get from endlessly scrolling to find something of interest.

i remember getting an ipod nano for xmas and having to learn to pirate songs. its like a little time capsule, the stuff i was listening to directly pulls me back several years in my memories. its harder to delete stuff on an ipod, whereas on spotify the second i stop enjoying a song, its gone with a tap, and that removes the opportunity to come back to it years later.

Leaving your phone behind is also somewhat of a luxury, I always need to have it if I go out incase something happens so I can message my mom or call 911 if needed, I don't trust going out alone so the phone is a necessity for me.
