The 1980's Maths Teachers' Enemy - CASIO NUMBER INVADERS are back

preview_player
Показать описание
This was how we snuck/sneaked an electronic game into class in 1982 - and now you can bring one into your business meetings because Casio has reissued their Number Invaders game calculator.

UPDATE - In the game if you shoot two numbers in succession that add up to 10 then the invader appears - the invader is worth more points.

- or you could always just stop playback of this video when you want to stop watching. When the fun stops, stop.

My math teacher in 1980 told me you won't be carrying around a calculator in your pocket every day all the time. Hahaha

I had literally forgotten about Number Invaders for 35-odd years. As soon as this video started, *POW* there I was in the playground with my friend Leon showing it on his watch. Thanks for the rekindled memory!

When I was in the service stationed in Saudi Arabia if you gave blood it paid 50 Riyal. At the motel where we stayed the gift store had one of those Casio watches for 50 Riyal. So almost everybody in the unit ended up with a "Blood Watch".

Love how they made a 'game over' tag in the crystal display rather than just have it written in the number display...😅😂

The N comes up when you shoot down two numbers that add up to 10, the N gives much higher score particularly if you can get more than one on the screen at a time.

OMG! When I was in 'Intermediate School' (years 7 & 8, or in my case 1980 & 81) in New Zealand, this was the biggest thing going. I never had one but a kid used to rent his out for $2 for a weekend. We used to call the 'n' thing the 'Mothership'. Each time you erased 2 numbers that equalled 10, you would get one. So that added a other level of skill, requiring you to erase numbers quickly while also making sure they added up to 10. Kids that were really good at it would have a whole bunch of 'motherships' on the screen at once. On top of that, they were worth more points than the ordinary numbers. As the game when on, and you reached higher levels, the numbers that you had to delete moved faster and faster, making it quite hard. Thanks for posting this.

Is 3 years long enough to wait for prices to settle down? Yes! Just ordered one.

Leave it to Techmoan to find a hidden gem in the most boring of products and make a calculator interesting.

It was reported that Gunpei Yokoi got the idea of the Game and Watch when he saw a businessman played with his calculator on the train to pass the time.
I wonder if it was that kind of calculator now that I am aware of those Casio ones...

*ALSO - There’s a bit more info in the video description text box regarding the strategy behind making the higher scoring invader ‘n’ appear*

In college we're required to have graphical calculators. You can program a basic version of Smash Bros, and even doom onto them. Fun times.

Woah, what an amazing outro! I just realized how amazing the old tech was with all those moving things and flashing bits.

I remember having a number invaders game on my calculator circa 1983. It was a Casio but came in a white plastic case unlike the one you show from the Argos catalogue. As I recall my dad quite enjoyed playing it too.

The calculators required in American math classes now have had the capacity for custom programs, including games, for at least a decade plus. I'm sure I'm not the only one with fond memories of finishing classwork early with a TI-83 and kicking back with some BLOCK DUDE.

Your videos are awesome sir, I am 25 years old and I do enjoy watching your stuff. My mom said that when we move she's going to get me a record player so I'm really excited about that, you've sparked my interest in record players and I appreciate that.

I got this calculator as a gift in 82... Sweet memories. Had it for a long time and got quite an impressive highscore then, but I lost it and thought i'd never see something like it again. Thanks for bringing back these fond memories!

Ive always loved casio brand electronics. I had a casio color graph calculator and a databank calculator watch. If i remeber correctly they had a databank watch that had an eye on it that you used with software on your pc and programmed the information into the computer then it comnunicated by flashing a special series of barcodes on the screen that the watch could read and translate into information you could then view on the watch.
Hmmm smart watch? Different protocol but that is wireless infomation transmission there.
Casio is one of the most underappreciated tech companies out there. There stuff works and is durable. Im sure if i still had the color graph, it would work just fine. And it was half the price that a competetive ti product was going for. Slightly smaller screen, but easier programming and it had three colors on the lcd display. Loved it.

Thank you so much for this video! I remember as a small kid having the opportunity to play this game on my uncles' Casio watch couple of times and I remember being completely mesmerized by it, so much so that later, when I had a chance to have my own electronic devices, I hoped I would come across this game once again on one of them. But I didn't, and I didn't know the name of this game, and I didn't even completely remember what was the actual gameplay. Now you helped me to remember it! And that causes me to try to find a version of that game on the computer or smartphone!

I saved my money and bought one of those Casio watches in high school. Spent many boring hours playing that game. And yes, I vividly remember getting into that rhythm.

My dad is a HAM radio operator, so we went to the Rochester HAM fest this weekend. But I never knew that I would come back with a Unisonic 21 Blackjack calculator! Go and look it up, you can actually play a full-blown version of blackjack on it, and it still works as a calculator when you need it for that, too.
