My apartment in Florida was $720/mo when I first moved there in 2015, now that same apartment goes for $1650/mo! My apartment in Phoenix in 2020 was $1200/mo, now only 2-3 years later, it's $1800/mo! Yet corporations are paying the same or even lower wages as they have for the past several decades! I've given up and moved back in with my parents. I'm not going to play this stupid game anymore and am looking into moving to another country now.

You gave the long answer. The short answer is: Greed.

Landlords know renters options are running thin, and are taking full advantage of it.

The middle class is dead. Good luck to any college graduate with college debt, high rent, high food cost, high transportation costs.

I live in Alabama and it cost almost $1200 per month for a one bedroom apartment. Not including the $1200 security deposit. $2400 just to move in and that doesn't include utilities. That's ridiculous. Especially in Alabama.

America used to be the land of opportunity, the land of the free, and the home of the brave. However, it's been in a serious decline, in recent years. That being said, overly high rent is an international problem. A dwelling should be looked at as just that, a dwelling. Not so much as a banker's capital investment.

40 years later and nothing trickled down to us.

Here on Miami a small studio in 2015 used to cost 600 USD. And now in 2023 the same shoe box cost 1, 600 USD per month. Lots of people expend 85 % of their income just in rent. We have to get together with other family members just to survive. It’s freaking insane.

Rents are high because of Air BNB (took so many places off the market), corporations buying up blocks of houses and condos charging higher rents and landlords raising prices and being greedy because they can. Like someone else here commented, it’s a dwelling, your base shelter, not some investor or banks pocket money. Rents right now are out of control and fleecing the population on a basic human need (unless of course you make Silicon Valley wages or are a celebrity) real people cannot afford it.

Rent in my town in the UK went up 40%+. A 4 bed detached house was 1200pm, now its 2200 per month. My landlord put my rent of a 3 bed semi up from 600 to 950pm. Its greedflation, mostly!

At this point now, i think victims of greedflation should take from their greedy bosses, landlords and businesses. Just as they have been taken from!

In California a 3-bedroom apartment rent is $2, 800 to $3, 900 and up. Landlords also want you to make 3x times the monthly rent and you need a high credit score.

Rents are so high for a very good reason.
As a long time real estate investor, landlord and real estate lender its very simple.
Landlords that offer lease and rental properties are absorbing the City and County improperly appraised tax rates of City, School and County taxes.
Thats it.
And the rates go up every year more than 10%. And the renters are going to pickup the tab. Not the owner of the property.

As it should be.

Here in Europe (Portugal) the minimum wage is 740€. You're lucky if you can find a decent house for rent for this same price. And we're talking about cities as far from the main city as a 30 minute drive. If you're single, you can't live in a house, you have to rent a room that costs 40% to 50% of this income.

I live in a rural mountain town in NM where the rent is through the roof and way above the medium income! It’s really stressful. Its the biggest problem in my area.

Seriously, if all the new generation can afford is a house then the economy is totally F'ed! Earnings will suffer in any non house related company until we can solve this national housing problem.

In Austin, a lot of people that used to spend 1/4 of their income on rent now spend 1/2 at the same places in just a few years.

My rent has been increasing by 50% to 70%! Per year over the past few years. I am now having to move out after now being charged $2861 per month for my apartment. It's just too insane. I'm glad I'm buying a house soon because this is ludicrous.

Tennessee here. In a small city I moved into a nice new construction condo in 2017 for $800/M, same property is now $1600. Crooks, plain and simple. Rentals are filled same day.
