There is no distinct term for a "continent." There are several definitions which seem to contradict each other. Some people used the definition "large bodies of land separated by water, " while other people say a continent is decided by tectonic plates. There are further definitions which make it even more confusing.

The first definition I mentioned seems to imply that Europe and Asia aren't two continents, and instead become Eurasia. This would also mean Africa would join (as a canal is not a "large body of water") making the Afroeurasia continent.

Of course, having that as one big continent is ridiculous. The other definition seems to rely on major tectonic plates.

The problem with this though, is that would mean there would be 16 continents.

Really it's not based on geographical features anymore. It's based on political agreement; seeing these as more region-exclusive areas than scientific terms.
