Excellent video. I thought about NAS technology, but I have been running PLEX on my computer for over 12 years if not more and it works great. I also store my music, family pictures and I can access it from anywhere in the world. I travel to say Puerto Rico and still access my media content and access PLEX. It is awesome.

Excellent. I’ve been doing the DIY version just with a Mac Mini and external disk. Running Jellyfin as the media server, also set up my router for external private streaming on the go. Looking at adding 4K content to the mix, need a new drive to do that.

Was wondering where you guys went! Very glad to see you back and with a very nice walkthrough video like this!

I was doing this before I had a home theater, just so much more convenient then discs. Never have to worry about a movie going off a service, or trying to remember what service a movie is on. My server is always there, organized the way I want it.

I've been using my DROBO for almost 10 yrs 40tb and have only replaced my WD server HD's 2 times. works like a champ across 4 tv's in the house.

Remodeled a room for immersive sound. After spending $10K on equipment I feel like a fool having to deal with CEC, arc, and remote control juggling act issues. It's more aggravation, than entertainment, and I paid for it. I spent more time working on it than I'll ever spend enjoying it. Tech is a PITA. If you want aggravation you can get that from working, and at least get paid for it.

I Use Synology DS918+ 4bay unit and I just added the expansion unit for all my old DVD's and now Blu-Rays uploaded on to it, I use EMBY which is open source works the same as PLEX but I can tweak it more.

I prefer Kodi to play ripped movies. The amount of customisation to the library you can make in terms of media, themes, etc is awesome.

Nice video. Last year I bought an external Asus BlueRay drive, downloaded Make MKV, Handbrake and VLC player. I was able to copy one of my DVDs on my laptop, but the VLC player keep asking for a code to play back the movie. I finally gave up (is Plex easier?).

I looked into Zappiti . Very Expensive. Like all NASs (their's is a rebadged unit made by someone else), it is sold without hard drives. In addition to paying for the drives, they also charge you more for the Asus blue ray drive needed to convert movies. And even after you have uploaded your movies onto the NAS, you have to buy their their media players for every TV you want to steam movies to (you can't stream them directly from Zappiti's NAS). I think a basic system would be over $10K. Then if Zappiti goes out of business, you'd be stuck with a worthless equipment that is full of movies that couldn't be played back. I guess they are relying upon people not remembering how that happened with Circuit City's proprietary DIVX system.

Thanks for the info, I've been curious how plex systems work. At this point I feel it's simpler and easier for me to just buy the blu-ray and put it in my blu-ray player when I want to watch a movie.

If you didn't buy those bluerays, where did you get them from? 2:12 7:10

The Vero 4k plus is a great player. You can put your nas through it. Kaleidescapes issue is that none of that on board storage is redundant so if you lose a drive, you lose that data.

Great video as always! Lots of options out there - just have to figure out what works best for you ans your setup. This is a great option for sure!

How large are your video files? I compress mine a bit while maintaining a good picture and good audio quality. I go from 30 gig files and shrink them down to 1.5 gigs on average. I use MakeMKV to rip my discs; them use FFMPEG to compress them. I use the H264 codec and yuv420p10le pixel format for the video, then copy the audio codec and shrink it down to 512k/per second. They look and sound great, while taking up 1.5 gigs on average.

I have a Synology DS1819+. It has 8 10Tb hard drives. I use Plex /Chromecast and a Chromecast Ultra on the tv. I cast from my iPhone onto the Chromecast and it serves everything great if it’s under 4k quality. I downloaded a sample 4k media file and tried to serve it to the tv downstairs and it timed out and wouldn’t play. I’m not a Plex expert by any means so perhaps I don’t have it connected right. Going to upgrade our old tv to a new Sony a80k this year so maybe that will allow me to remove the Chromecast device and serve directly to the tv which may make a difference but as of now it’s a no-go.

Great video! Kaleidescape is definitely interesting if their point of entry comes down a bit in price. Do you find that the 4k HDR metadata is maintained when ripping and playing back via the Shield?

Great video, I have been thinking about integrating Plex into my system for a while now, but technology in this area is moving so fast, it is hard to know the best way to go. This gives me a better understanding as well as some options

I understand the idea of in-home streaming, but besides disc ripping where would I get an even higher quality versions of the movie

Surprising he didn't mention anything about torrents. Following the "cover you NAS" handbook. :D
